Hi everyone. I went yesterday to look at a 87 GN and the car has T-Tops. Pretty nice car, but when he pulled the T-Tops there is rust under the niddle rail where the T-Tops sit. I have never looked at a GN with T-Tops but this scared me about the car. I will try explane a little better where it was. There is trim that goes around the opening of the top of the car. This is the actual "rail" or center support of the roof where the T-tops meet and it was not just surface rust. It was deep, cratered rust. It was on the rail towards the back of the car. This seemed to me to be pretty major. What do you guys think? It is a 117,000 mile car. Stock all the way. Interior pretty nice only one little hole in the driver seat, needs a headliner, looked like the tops had leaked at one time or maybe leaking from the rust. No rust to speak of under the doors. One rust spot coming through passenger side behind door at wheel well. Rear bumper filler cracked. Decent paint but checking, bottom of car had been painted at one time all the way around. Spoiler faded slightly, but rear bumper fillers faded and paint peeling. Newer tires, nice original wheels he wants 10,000.
Sorry for the long post but just to let you know what I'm looking at.
Thanks all.
What do a few of you think?

Ttop cars

If its opinions you want I have one :)

Way too much money

Also pull the PS kick panel, remove the ECM, remove and check the connectors and sockets for corrosion. Ttops are susceptible to leakdowns in that area. You might also pull back the carpet on both DS and PS at the front to see if there is evidence of leaks. Mine had all of the above :(
Genuine GM replacement weatherstripping for my Ttop cost just under $900CAD and that did not include the trunk deck lid.

T-top cars are a problem waiting to happen. Many times the rust is hidden by the piece you saw that was rusted. People who think they have no problem, really do. Comical to me people think that because TTop cars cost more new, they should be worth more on resale. LOL!

$10,000? w/rust? Another mental case. The world is full of em.

Hey guys I really appreciate the replies. I know now that I will forget that car. I did call about another one today, it happens to be a 86 with 79,000 miles on it. Digital dash, posi, concert sound all that good stuff. I have just talked to him on the phone and he sounds like a middle aged guy.Very nice, spent quite a bit of time on the phone with me. He has had the car for 10 years or so and it has always been garaged. He has put 9,000 miles on it in his ownership. He said no rust whatsoever, and the condition is mint to excellent. Still has the original paint. DRAWBACK????
T-top car...........After reading your replies im really nervous about buying a t-top car. I have a climate controlled building that my current car sits in, and this one would too. The car would probably never see rain. He wants 9950.00. Still a bad move?

Check it out. I don't think he can get close to $9950 unless the car is extremely nice. I bought a pretty square 87 TType about 6 months ago for $5300......miles in the 90s. Turned it for $6900. I'd pay $7500 for what I judged to be a real nice one. JMO

Incidently, a local guy here just purchased an 87 T for $9600. This car is jam up nice. Belonged to a darkredT on here. The kind of car that would be difficult to find because it was so well done. $6900 paint job and all NEW chrome parts including new bumpers. Car was new in and out. This car was worth the kind of money you're talking about.
