Was browsing on ebay this morning and came across a new shift "cable" on there for an 86-87 GN. My question is....is there suppose to be a shift cable? I have an 86 T-type with the center console...but noticed while I was removing things to remove tranny that it is shifted through the column linkage and also noticed that the steering column collar moves when it is shifted from park. Is this normal? I thought there should be a cable directly from the shifter to the tranny shift bracket.

Yes, there is a shifter cable...runs from the base of the shifter to a lever on the driver's side of the transmission. I bought mine new from the dealer in 2000. It was less than $35.00.

So it should be a cable from the shifter to the transmission? Mine does not shift like that..it shifts through the column linkagage? But I have the console shifter!

If your using the console shifter to shift, you are using the cable. If your cable should ever break (like mine has been for the last couple weeks), you can still shift the car by turning the collar behind the steering wheel. That gets old after awhile, trust me.

Can this be by-passed??? Straight floor shift while locking column in park for lock & key removal??
Realizing I will lose shift lock but OK !! Too much linkage for a cable !!

You will also lose reverse lights and be able to crank the car while it's not in park or neutral.

When I was putting my car back together I thought about fabing up a cable to replace all those rods and bellcranks and junk. One day I still might.
