Sanding question

I was doing bodywork on my car and my girlfreind asked me a question I am not sure about...When sanding, are you supposed to only sand in one direction. As in If I start laterally sanding should I do that for the entire process. If this is a stupid question feel free to let me know because I feel like I should know this...

iirc, your supposed to sand in different directions each time you change the grit.

So for example you could sand lateral, change grit, then change to vertical and do the entire car each time?
