Just got a SM 2.1. Hooked it up and it says the version, then just shuts itself off. Thought it might be that the white wire isn't firmly in place, but double checked and it is. Any ideas?

Terence, ignition has to be ON for scanmaster to show #
i think. Also check that the white wire goes to the pin 'E' thats the
second one on the left in top row.

I tried it with the key turned, and then with the engine started and still nothing. The white wire is in pin E, the one with the connecter which has the orange wire. I wedged it in good, but still nothing. I may have to crimp the orange wire and attach the white one to it, but I can't really get in there to crimp as space is tight and my crimpers are large. If I do and it still doesn't work, can it be that pin E is somehow getting no power?

Be sure you have a small spade connector on the hookup wire, or take one of those U shaped elec connectors and clip one side off, since the ADL opening is small. I have the SM wire hooked into the orange wire behind the ADL. It can be done, but like you said, it will not be easy. Here is how I hooked mine up if you want to get fancy and use the ashtray switch plate and some 4 pin connectors from Radio Shack :
Slick way to hook up a ScanMaster

Check your ground connection. The Scanmaster has to have a good ground to work. Or, change your ground and see if that fixes the problem. If you have a voltmeter to check the continuity of the ground it would also be helpful.

Hope this helps,
Ryan
