Since I work in the IT field with mainframe computers, everyone thinks I know all about internet technology and PCs..which I do not..
But I've had 1 friend and 1 customer ask about internet web cams for their shopping center and one for a bar.

I'm looking for something that is very easy to setup, and can then be viewed from anywhere in the world connected to the internet, and also be able to record and play back remotely as well...not requiring a server on site where the camera is located.
I've read some about fee services where you can basically hook up the cam to a router via a wired LAN cable, and then a web service will keep recordings of what it views for a monthly subscription fee, thus not requiring you to have a server to keep the recordings on.

Anyone have any experience with easy to use cams to accomplish what they are asking for? (Has to be viewable over the web at a remote location from where the cam is located.)

My friend has an ademco alarm at his vacation home .It does have a server on site with motion detected cameras that turn on when movement is detected it is also hooked up for break ins and fire.He can go on his cell phone and link to the computor to watch the cameras. I think he has 600.00 in his system but he nows the guy.I am upgrading mine to wireless and new modem and it is six hundred from the same guy.I install and he sets it up

Yeah, been reading ever since I posted this, looks like setting a cam up to be viewable anywhere via the web is pretty easy...its the being able to record and playback thats the challenge.... Either need a server on location at the camera site to store it (like a DVR) and have software on top of that to be able to play back remotely...or have a screen video capture software on the remote computer to record the images shown over the internet.... or pay a recording service, but most of those only record an image every few seconds or minute... Need real time playback of recorded image as the guy with the bar wants it to ensure whats being done behind the bar and with the cash register.

I used to do business with this guy. I thought he was pretty sharp.

This is a topic I am very interested in. We need a security cam system for our deer camp. We want to have cameras watching the gates all the time, problems with trespassers and neighbors.

Do the inititial investigation of each location.

Decide on quantity of cameras, distance to subject matter and field of view and distances.

Decide what you want to record and when and how it will be triggered.

These folks will design the system based on your input.

You probably will need some professional input for a shopping center and bar, and even for the deer camp to do it right.

There's duplex, triplex, quad, and 5 way systems that allow you to backup, edit, watch, and record all at once along with remote viewing etc.

Digital DVR's have some cool features.

Security CCTV Video Cameras, DVR's, & Systems ...Plus a full line of MATV and SMATV equipment

MCM Electronics also has some cool stuff onsale this month.

Can those be linked to a PDA? IPhone?

If you set up a networked computer and security system there is software out there that allegedly would allow access to the system.

I've never tried it so I can't endorse it.

Here's one I found via google.

Nor do I know much about how all the internet access works with the various data phones.

If I ever get a micro PC/phone which is what I want (7" screen) via 3G or the 4G phone network I may try it.

Most of the networked camera systems have alarm outputs that automatically send out emails and/or phone alerts so you could go online at another computer and log into your network for remote access and probably see a whole lot more that way.

Thanks for the tips so far. I'm going to stop by a local spy/surveillance shop later this week to see what I can learn from them. I know I'll need low LUX cameras for the dark situations and varying focal lengths depending on the area to be video'd. I think I can figure out how to make it all work if I know what parts to gets so I'm hoping I don't need to hire anyone if I'm capable myself.
After researching alot, I see the online services will not work as none of them can record real time, all are still shots every 30 secs to 2 mins...elasped time photos essentially, in line DVR or PC software so the PC can be the DVR at the site ocation will be required, most have software that allows you to control the camera remotely also via any web browser, and even smart phones that can browse the web.
I'll keep reading, and post up what I end up getting or trying out for one of the guys wanting this.
