shaft play / end play

Where would I be able to find info on shaft/end play? would you get side to side play with the turbo off and no oil in it? it has nearly no end play, only side to side. ??? is there a link somewhere that covers this isue? thanks, scot w.

with this being a turbo web site someone should know something about this. ???

Some radial (up/down,left/right) play is perfectly normal, even on a new one (assuming it's not ball bearing). Axial (in/out) play is something you don't want to be able to feel.
