When needing to punch good holes in gasket material for those custom gaskets that I just cant wait 3 days special order.

I used to drill em out and make a mess so i got myself a leather punch kit
leather punch kit, Parts Accessories, Leathercraft items on eBay.com

Gaskets such as vac block for example. Its the only one ive had to make so far but since no stores carried one, i made a few.

Pablo,
I used to do the crayon trick for locating my placement of a balance tube on my SBC's..good one

Oil filters: I think weve all had the mess like on chevys, ive always punched hole and let drain before removing.

If you strip an oil plug in the pan and need to change it after just filling up/changing oil, take the end of your shopvac, put it in the oil fill tube with a little duct tape to cover the gap and turn it on.

You can take the plug out losing minimal oil. The vacuum will keep it in the pan and not suck it in the vacuum.

Then replace the stripped plug with a new plug.

Simple one.

If you need to check for spark, pull a wire off a spark plug, stick a plastic handled screw driver in the contact in the boot, hold the metal shaft of the screw driver near some iron and have someone turn the car over. If you have spark, you will see it jump between the screw driver shaft and the iron. If you don't, you have probably just figured out why your car isnt running.

Another.

If your car starts to overheat, immediately turn on the heater full blast, even if it is summer. The heater core will serve as an additional way to cool the motor. Of course, this is if you MUST keep going and the heater trick is just enough to keep the motor in the safe range...otherwise stop immediately. This is also a trick that can be used on your way back to the pits from a pass to help cool down faster. Heck, during the run for that matter if you don't mind the extra draw from the fans running.
