Simple one.
If you need to check for spark, pull a wire off a spark plug, stick a plastic handled screw driver in the contact in the boot, hold the metal shaft of the screw driver near some iron and have someone turn the car over. If you have spark, you will see it jump between the screw driver shaft and the iron. If you don't, you have probably just figured out why your car isnt running.
Another.
If your car starts to overheat, immediately turn on the heater full blast, even if it is summer. The heater core will serve as an additional way to cool the motor. Of course, this is if you MUST keep going and the heater trick is just enough to keep the motor in the safe range...otherwise stop immediately. This is also a trick that can be used on your way back to the pits from a pass to help cool down faster. Heck, during the run for that matter if you don't mind the extra draw from the fans running.
