Shift lock question

I have had my GN broken down for a couple years now, and getting ready to put the shift handle back on. Without the shift handle, I can shift the car into all gears by just pushing the lever forth or backwards. I can also take car out of park without pressing brake.
Is there a locking feature or something built into the handle?

If its a stock shifter your talking about then yes there's a plastic rod in the middle and a little j hook that locks into place on the bracket side can send some pics if needed

The 1st 2 pics are the plastic pice that goes into the shift handle the last 2 pics are the j rod and the locking plate it slides into

Thanks so much for the pictures, they cleared ALOT up for me. I tore the car down as soon as I purchased it 2007 and didn't really remember anything about the shifter, especially since I had to shift it from column when I brought it.

I found all of my pieces except the spring. Is there anything special about that spring where I will have to order it from one of our Buick Speciality placesvor can I find one at the hardware store? Is there a way you can measure the diameter and length of the coils In case I can run to the hardware store for a replacement?

Looks like the spring by itself holds the J-Rod up in place, correct? Is that a little flat plate or something in between the J-Rod and the spring? (or is that just a flat piece part that is welded to your J-Rod?)

The spring just sits under It there is no metal plate it messures 2 and 1/8 in length and 1/8 inch in dia
