shifting problems

My friend's car has a problem with the transmission not shifting into 3rd and 4th gear. What could this be? Thanks in advance!

My guess is stuck valves in the vb, direct clutches or center support leak.

Could be anything from a stuck shift valve to a tossed governor spring. Some more detailed information would help.

Was the transmission rebuilt? If so, did it ever work right after the rebuild? If not, describe what happened when it stopped working. Were the shifts there one second/gone the next?

Greg, I think that's how it happened. The car was shifting fine then it stopped. I also notice it delaying the 1-2 shift, then it slams into 2nd. The tranny isn't rebuilt. Thanks for the help!

Well since all the shifts seem affected, the easiest thing to do would be to pull the pan and check the governor first. It may have tossed the spring off.
