Hey Guys,

Has anyone had their side view mirror pop off ? The wind blows alot here in Denver, and a gust blew open my side gate. It hit the passenger side view mirror and knocked it off the post on the door. It has a small stamped steel plate that goes inside the mirror post attached to the door, and I guess that plate bent and was pulled thru the post. To take the post off, it looks like you have to remove the window to get at the post screws. Then you would have to remove the post and make a new plate that would go inside the post and then screw into mirror body. GM does not make this mirror anymore, so I was just going to remove it for now.

It has the remote mechanical cord that goes over to the dashboard. I took off the side door panel, which I may not have had to do. It looks like it might be a pain to disconnect that cord and pull it all the way across the car and out thru the post where it was knocked off.

Does anyone know whether that cord can be removed from the mirror glass ? From what I can see, it looks like it's permanently attached, so I don't want to start prying on it and break it off.

Also, just in case, does anyone have an extra passenger mirror to sell me ?

There are three wires inside the remote cable. They can be removed from the mirror. You have to pry the mirror glass off, must be very careful not to break obviously. The wires have balls crimped on the ends of each wire and are different colors. Just pull them forward a bit and they will slip off the adjuster. You might be able to get away with a larger thread screw to reattach the mirror to it's base.

Thanks alot, John. I just went out and looked at it again. The 3 wires come out of their sheaths, thru the screwed mounting plate that swivels on the mirror and then into the plastic backing on the mirror. They don't seem to come out of the mirror, however. I tried with a needle nose, but it seems like I will pull them out if I pull too hard, and I wouldn't think that they would go back in.

It seems like there may be rubber plugs in the 3 mirror holes. I don't know if they hold the wires in there or not. I may have to ruin the thing to get it off so I can drive the car.

It looks like what I need is a new mounting post to the door, since it appears that the pot metal surface with holes in it, which is the part of the post that the mirror housing bolts to, tore out of the post. I doubt that U could weld it back in, because it is cheap cast pot metal. Guess I'll have to check the J-Yards.
