Slop in shifter

Shifter(stock) works fine...but when in gear the shifter is sloppy...I can move it back and forth around an 1/8 inch...is the cable just stretched and I need a new cable or is there some type of adjustment that can be done?...

At 15 years old, I'd worry if it wasn't sloppy!

On mine, the pin that the cable slips over is worn and has a groove cut into from the cable. I used a small washer to space the cable out a little and it works fine now..
