What psi should I see on the pump gauge when I hit the test button. The pump speed is set on full

At least 40psi to spray. Mine reads about 60psi when someone pushes the test switch at full pump speed.

Mine's reading around 60psi also. The reason I ask is that sometimes my system doesn't spray when I pass the spray on point. I talked to Steve and he said he'd like to see the pump at about 80 psi. Mine works 90% of the time, it's just that 10% that could blow a head gasket. My battery voltage reads around 13.2 to 13.7 on the scanmaster. Steve said he thought that was low, and it should be around 14 volts.

Any ideas why mine sometimes doesn't kick on ? I'll double check the ground from the control unit.

Thanks

Striker,

Yes, the new ones have a gauge, but the problem is you need someone else to hit the button in the car while you read it. It also will not spray until pressure is at least 40psi.

JeffW,

You battery voltage should be around 14, but its not uncommon to get those readings at idle. Checking the grounds carefully would be a good idea.

It's very rare for one of those motors to intermittently start. Of course I got one..:) Steve replaced it..

You can check it the same way he did by running it for 3 minutes, then attempt to start it a couple dozen times. It should start every time. Naturally you would want to use water during the test. This would be a good time to verify the delivery rate, in ounces per second. That can be very usefull information, should you decide to downsize the nozzles..

It's a shame there isn't an affordable pressure sensitive switch that would only activate the 'alchy on' lite when alchy is being pumped, and not just when voltage has left the hobbs switch on it's way to the pump.

I like your idea of a pressure sensitive switch to indicate alky on rather than reading pump voltage to turn on the alky on lamp.

Are any "affordable" hobbs switches available that can be or are set at around 60 pounds??
Also a switch set at around 90 pounds - this one would shut off the light if the nozzle was to clog.

I dummo about that, but what I'd really like to see is something that would cut off the ignition in the absence of alchy spray. This way al least you wouldn't ruin a HG because of a malfunction in the alchy.

That shiould give you something to thoink about for a while...:)

So when the car is off, the gauge reads 0? I always wondered why I never saw a pressure reading on mine. I thought the containers were airtight and would show pressure all the time like the fuel pressure system. I'll check this out when my g/f gets home. I thought maybe the gauge was broke. I guess what confused me was the part on the SMC instructions that say "you should have a minimum of 40 psi pump pressure ( 4-6 on the dial )". I thought they meant the gauge would show 4-6 psi, meaning 40 or more.

Turbo Tim, the newer smc kit with the gauge does use a pressure sensitive switch. I activation (yellow) light only comes on when the alky is spraying, not when power is supplied to the pump.

Problem is with the pressure switch is it has to be "alcohol" compatible..

hang tight guys..if ya saw my PAC post.. soon to be 4 sale..I have a progressive controller that works of the GN 2 bar MAP sensor and uses an 0-100 psi alcohol pressure sending unit which goes on the pressure line... so as soon as it sprays..the led display on the controller increases with pump output..

I have the controller mocked up in my car rite now running of the map. results have been as expected ;) .Ran 94 mph in the 1/8 last nite :)

Other item I'm working on is the kill circuit..whereas if the car is in boost over 15lbs and the pump goes under 40 psi..it kills the motor temporairily, fires an in car warning lite, until the boost is reduced. That will happen before June1st.

Only setbacks are the PCB's and packaging issues..this has been the hardest part.

Pix soon ;)
