So how much did I kill the value of my GN?

As I get older I sit back and think about things and sometimes I get the.......why the F did I do that? Everybody probably gets that at some point so I figured I'd bounce my latest "Why the F did I do that" off you guys

I bought my first GN at 18 years old in 1998. It was an 85 with an 86/87 motor conversion. Fast car, loved it but sold it in 2002 for another 87.

So there I was, 2002, 22 years old and I've got a decent 87 GN I paid $7k for at the time. Pretty nice shape, 93k miles, blah blah blah. It had the wrong trans which I replaced with a correct trans out of a t-type that was wrecked. The digital dash would also flash, flicker and stop working all the time. I found a guy with another digital dash and dash harness for $150 so I scooped it up. Remember, this was 6 years ago and I was only 22, so instead of setting the mileage correctly on the new dash, I put it in with 42k showing. I never had plans on selling the car so it was no big deal to me.

So, I get it inspected, not thinking and they put down 142,xxx miles at DMV. That's when it hit me, I just accidentally put 50k miles on my car. Since then, I've re-titled it in my name (it was in my dads name), and run it through collectable registration again, all showing 143k miles. I rarely drive it so I've only got about 1,500 miles on it in the last 2-3 years.

It's not a mint car but it's not bad either, its in 3 condition I'd say. So here it is, 2008, these cars are really picking up steam now it seems and instead of having a car with sub 100k miles, I'm "officiall" at 143k. Stupid Stupid Stupid.

I think you worry too much.

Usually when you get a car inspected and don't tell them the mileage they write down exactly what's on the odometer, I've never heard of anyone putting a 1 or 2 in front of the actual number....

Should be a 43K car in my opinion.

If you have both dashes and all, it's not gonna matter much to anyone if you seem honest and tell the story again like you just did here.

The only reason I've even been thinking about it lately is because I was thinking of picking up a T and the GN would have to go. If the car stays with me the entire thing is moot ya know!

You do worry too much.
A 43K mile GN should look pretty nice. A 143K mile GN shouldn't look too nice.
It looks like 1 or the other. Not both.
Although this is probably not the greatest time to sell a 43K mile GN, This is probably not anywhere even close to a good time to sell a 143K mile GN.
A lot is going to depend on what catagory your Gn falls into visually. I personally would try to avoid selling anything other than a 1st rate turbobuick right now, and I think that the market might be off for quite some time. Good luck with your decision. Just my personal opinion though.

I'm not "worried" at all, just curious. Worried would be somebody just stole my GN, this is not something I stay up at night and think about.

It's not a 43k or a 143k car, it's a 94k mile car now.

In the real world I wouldn't think there's all that much value difference between a 93K and 143K mile car.

Oops, my bad, I forgot the current mileage part, and bottom line is there shouldn't be that much or any appreciable or detectable visual difference between a 93K mile car and a 143K mile car. Didn't mean to confuse the issue.

You should have put the correct odometer in, but that is spilled milk now. I would rather have 143K miles on teh title rather than 43K miles and having carfax comeback with mileage turned back and the car being classified as TMU (true mileage unkown) IMO 94K is in the 100K terroritory. Your car should be judged by condition as it appproaches and reaches 100k+ miles. You may have lost a little money, but its probably only few $100

The owner on my car before me accidentally checked the "Mileage exceeds mechanical limits" box, because there were 2 boxes and thought that one box had to be checked when it didn't, anyway....now on Carfax it says "Mileage exceeds mechanical limits" making everyone think my car has 157,000 miles when it is truly a documented 57k mile car.........don't ya love it!!!!!

The good weather has me really getting my GN ready for the first time in a few years. I haven't really been into it for awhile but the bug has me now!

Who cares about the mileage. When somebody comes to look at your car (if your selling it) they will be able to tell the quality of car they are looking at. Mileage doesnt scare me, neglect does. You can tell the difference between higher mileage nice cars and neglected ones buddy! HTH

You aren't selling it , right? Non-Issue as far as I can see.

Even when you do it's not really a low mile car either way. Keep it nice and well maintained and it'll be fine.

Now go out and drive it and run the miles up even further.

No, I'm not selling it but if the right Designer T or White with blackout T comes along I'd consider it. I just want to be prepared.
