So what did it sound like when your turbo gave up the ghost?

Leaving for lunch today my turbo started sounding like I had a rabid tom-cat trapped inside my TA-49 whenever I would accelerate. As another boardmember once described his turbo failure - kinda like an old fashoined police siren. Possibly due to the impeller rubbing the housing?

Anyone experience the same noise attributed to a turbo biting the dust?

Also - if the turbo did in fact kick the bucket, any suggestions on what turbo to look for as a replacement? TE-60? PT-52?

42.5 lb/hr green stripes
9/11 converter & PTE killer street tranny
Walbro 340M hotwired
ported throttle body
RJC Power Plate
Adjustable fuel pressure regulator
And all the usual cheapo mods

Thanks-

Mine just went. Normal driving sounded like squeeling metal, like something isnt greased and makes that metal grinding sound. Plus at idle, I had an irregular tapping noise but no grinding sound.

But now its faster then ever. Next season I'll give it a go.

Well - this is my first time I've removed the turbo, but to my untrained eye - it doesn't look good. There is contact between the compressor wheel and the inner housing. There is also a considerable amount of play in the shaft. I've attached some pics...

I like the idea of having it rebuilt if it's not too badly damaged. The only question I have left is, what would cause such a failure? The only thing I recall out of the ordinary is that the few days prior to the turbo going tits-up is that it sounded like I was getting some backflow through the turbo (as if I was letting off the throttle - that sneezing sound) when I was accelerating at 3/4 throttle or so.
