Hadn't heard anything mentioned about the car on fire at BG Friday evening. I was in the staging lanes 8ish?? talking with 87GNRickie, behind 1 Quick 6 and we hear someone yell for help. Look over at the pits and there are big flames coming off the engine of one of the fast cars. Don't know who the owner was, but it was black with a fiberglass body and a twin turbo setup.

Total burn time was maybe 20-30 seconds and several people jumped in to help put it out as quickly as possible. I heard something about the fuel pump being left on while they were trying to put the fire out.

Didn't look like any severe damage was done, but there are lots of wires in an engine compartment as well as all that powder getting sprayed into the open turbos on it. Very good looking car, fortunately the hood was off, so no body damage either.

Anyone have the details?

A car fire is no joke. Glad to hear he and the car ended up ok. He's lucky that it happened in the staging lanes where I assume the track personnel and others were quick to respond with extinguishers.

I didn't hear anything either, and that was right after my brother ran Jason White in the semis. Thought it was one of them. My brother has a firebottle system in his car, but I was still concerned.

That was Bob Stanley's car. It was mentioned that it was a faulty injector o-ring on the first fire. It then lit up again at the top end of the track on the return road on Saturday. I'm not sure of the cause with that one.

K.

It is Bob Stanley's car driven by Trampess Butcher. The car caught on fire either in the pits or the staging lanes on Friday night due to a faulty injector O-ring. They had to take the car to a carwash to clean up the mess and fixed the wiring in the motel parking lot that night. Came back Saturday not knowing if it was fixed or not. Trampess made a pass right behind me on Saturday. We were on the return road getting hooked up to tow back to the pits when we heard him yelling for help. He had gotten in his chute and started the car to drive back when it caught fire - this time with the hood on. By the time we got the fire out with the help of the EMTs and Beechbend personnel, the lexan windshield and hood were pretty heavily damaged - we assumed it was another o-ring leak. They had one tough week at BG but are still first class folks!

The first fire in the pits was next to my trailor and car(15ft) I was in the middle of walking back from the stands when we seen it we thought it our stuff.

Yeah I saw the fire first hand. I was right next to the fire. It was friday night at about 7-8 pm. I thought the car was going to blow up. I went up and looked at the car after the fire. It appeared the fire was right on the fuel rail. I believe what sparked the fire was the hole someone cut in the distributer. I could see the rotor and the contacts. A faulty o-ring probably didnt help. I couldnt believe it when the car caught on fire the second time. You think he would have learned the first time:confused:

hole in distributer cap is to phase ignition. if you look in the hole, no contacts.

In the ..

"FWIW" dept...
Some yrs ago, I was using the brown o'rings on the injs I serviced. I got some complaints of leaks....
I called my supplier, and he said that there was a better quality ring.. Delphi approved, as I recall. It is black in color, and appears to be softer in durometer, seals better, and has a much smoother surface.
Price difference?? About double.
I sent the browns back, and have used only the black rings, since.

I'm not sure what quality the "HELP SECTION" rings at "Twilitezone" are, but I'd be really careful using rings of unknown material/quality.
I've seen some "incoming" posted about the "stealership" ring prices... Maybe there's a reason??

Another "item" I've seen...
Aftermkt rails w/ heavy tool marks in the inj seal bores. A sure way to create a leak. I've had to polish some w/ crocus cloth and Scotchbrite, to get them to quit leaking.

I've not had fuel leaks at the rails... But then, I don't run 40# boost, either.:D :D

Back under my inj bench....;)

I couldnt believe it when the car caught on fire the second time. You think he would have learned the first time:confused:

Fuel from a leaking O-ring got ignited by the rotor. The hole is used to phase the rotor when setting timing. The cause of the second fire was unknown and not necessarily related. What exactly is it you think he would have learned the first time? These are friends of mine who know their stuff and would never put a car back on the track if they didn't think it was OK. The only thing they learned is that they need an on board fire supression system.

I was 1 QUIK 6 in the staging lanes with IMJOESNUFFY. We both grabbed our extinguishers to help and someone else did too. This car fire was the one in the pits just outside the staging lanes corner. When someone yelled to turned the fuel pump off it got uncomfortable real quick:eek: Glad we got the fire out in very fast fashion. I didn't see or know the owner but I did see the car back the next day all cleaned up, just didn't see him make a pass. It appears the car is OK, which is good because I am sure he had some coin tied up in that car.

You think he would have learned the first time:confused:
this has to be the most arrogant statment i have every heard. bob stanley and crew are great people. i would have to say you dont know $hit about running a fast car. next time think about what you post.

Ditto that! It ain't as easy as some people seem to think going this fast - stuff like this happens sometimes!

I can' take credit for helping put out the fire. I think you were in front of us and I mentioned the fire extinguisher, as we didn't have one. Glad it got put out quickly, and others were quick to help out. I assumed that was your username as I remember the license plate.

It appeared to me the fire started in the exact same way as the first. The torched area was identical in both fires. I saw them both first hand. I was really scared to hear that the car had caught fire the second time. I feared the worst for the driver. Thankfully he was ok after the blaze. Sorry to have offended anybody. I just felt very vulnerable with my truck, trailer, and car right next to the blaze.
