i put a drill on the speedo cable at the trans and it read a const 30mph. i took the driven gear out and replaced it and still no go. what is my next step?

yes i did. i put a drill on the cable and made it spin and it read 30mph on the speedometer. i screened the cable on to the bullet and spun the gear and the speedometer moved. so i don't think its the cable

don't think it can hurt to pull the cables and grease them anyway...

Mine was acting crazy and I simply pulled it, wiped it down and lubed it up with some lithium grease and it's fine now.

You know there's 2 cables. One behind the dash and one off the trans accessible from the engine bay.

I can't say why it would work with a drill on it and not otherwise but I'm finding that these cars are funny like that. (ex: If I change a spark plug, a light bulb goes out...go figure... )

Anyway, mine was working intermittently. It would have a wild swinging motion and sometimes just stop altogether, then resume working. I only managed to pull the one behind the dash and clean it but apparently that was all it needed. It wasn't hard to do. The PITA was pulling the dash cluster w/o loosing screws and breaking brittle plastic.

Give it a try, can't loose anything... Might be the fix too.

Good Luck

Check the short shaft

I had a problem simular to this. My short shaft from next to the fire wall to the dash was the problem. The long shaft(to the transmission) would spin but, when it got connected to the short shaft I got nothing.

It may also be not one but, both gears in the transmission are bad (there's one inside the pan as well as the one on side of the tranny ). It may spin when you look at it but, when drag is applied (hooking cable to transmission) the gears slip.
