After tranny swap, speedo started going nuts. Would work great one day, then not at all the next. I bought a new speedo cable, which I installed today. I replaced the section from the tanny to the firewall. Now the speedo works until about 20 mph then quits. What next, replace the section from the firewall to the cluster or replace the speedo gear in the tanny? Should I lube the upper section? If so, with what? A buddy who works at a GM dealer in parts has told me that I have to pull the speedo gear to get the correct one for the tanny. It seems that GM used a variaty of speedo gears in these cars. Is this true or was there one specific to the turbo tanny? TIA

You got somethin funny going on. Yes they are particular for the turbo car but not an issue. Very easily obtained and cheap. But they just dont fail. Either gov gear or driven gear doing something funny or gear is distorted, but I doubt it. You can try this. Jack car on stands. Take cable off at trans and put your thumb on gear while someone runs the speed up. See if it stops which I bet it doesnt. Sounds more like a head problem however I have seen the cable shove itself up while changing trannys causing this. Disconnect and ck gear movement to satify that. While reinstalling, slide cable out so you KNOW engagement is at least a 1/4 or so of an inch. See what happens.
