I've never had this problem before. But with my luck, it was only a matter of time.

The problem is the speedometer drive gear housing is corroded to the case. I've soaked it in WD, tried to rotate it with an old cable nut, wedged it with a nail bar, knocked on it with a punch and hammer, pulled the gov out and knocked on the inside.... all that's left is the blue torch or welding my slide hammer to it. That is unless someone saves me with divine guidance and experience.

Lookin' for help, TIA...

ahhhh..... be careful!!!

EEEEK!!! I have seen people break cases trying to get them out. If it is a east coast or mid west car you may never get it out. I got mad once and broke a case trying to get one out. I will not do that again. So if it doesnt leak and speedo works, do not screw with.

heat

I just removed 2 of these, 1 for myself, 1 for a friend. These were out of the car and empty. I used a small torch, like one uses for sweating copper plumbing joints. I put heat on the case using caution (aluminum melts at 1260). Put vice grips on the housing, twist and pull out. Works perfectly! Good Luck

Looks like I'll give the blue torch a try...

It is a NE Coast trans (can't get much worse than that).

I must remove in order to have my speedo calibrated correctly.

I'll use propane instead of MAPP. It burns a little cooler. I also will not worry about damaging the driven gear "bullet". For some reason, when I bought a new driven gear from GM, they would only sell me the gear complete with bullet (expensive).

Thanks for the advice,

Looks like you just found out why. :p

Success!!!!

Applied the blue wrench for a minute or so, clamped on the threads with a pair of vice-grips, twisted back and forth. Applied the heat one more time, twisted back and forth, and voila - out it came! Although the bullet is permanently damaged, I couldn't be happier!
