My transmission took a dump and in the process of searching for a rebuilt one, it brought up an interesting question. I am interested in a tranny a guy has that was set up for a Stage Motor. When I asked him what the stall was he said for a stock motor 2800-3000 and for a Stage Motor 3400. I thought that a stalll speed is a stall speed. He said that torque and hp play a role in the stall speed. If indeed that is correct, then shouldn't a stock motor have a higher speed than a Stage motor since the stock motor will take longer to build the torque than a 800 hp motor? I am not at all familiar with automatic tranny so I will leave this out there for the experts.

Torque does have a lot to do with stall speed. The more input torque on the converter, heavier the car, deeper gears, brake holding power, the higher the stall can be. Turbos make the torque come in sooner than a n/a engine. Stock hotairs made 300lb.ft. by 2400rpm, intercooled cars made near 360.

Maybe I wasn't clear on what I was asking. If you buy a torque converter that is advertised as 3000 Stall, will it make a difference if you have a stock car or highly modified? I know that with larger turbos you need a high stall so the turbo will spool sooner. Irregardless of that does a converter behave differently depending on horsepower/torque?

Yes you were clear. Maybe I wasn't. If you use it in stock application, you might only reach 2600 stall, take it out and install it in a 750hp Stage setup and you would probably get 5100 stall. Depends on torque, gears, blahblahblah.:D

Converters can vary greatly from car to car even. With like set ups it can vary anywhere from 50 to 200 rpm. As far as buying a set stall speed converter off the shelf and expecting it to stall at that speed in every car is not a realistic expectation. Mark
