Hey Guys! Havent been on in a while.. I Heard the bad news about Bill. I didnt know him but I am sorry to hear of his passing. My condolances go out to his family and those of you who knew him...RIP... I hope everyone else is good and their TR's are treating them well! My project is still just that for now..Getting alittle done at a time but had to slow the pace alittle...The cash flow slowed down and my wife was ready to divorce me! I did get to work on it alittle more today and decided to take it for a spin around the block a few times. Car seems to be running well..Nice and smooth and the scanmaster numbers are in good order. My fuel pressure is about 40lb so all seems pretty good..BUT! I'm still not getting that launching power that would smoke the tires and when she does gets going I notice a knock reading anywhere between 3.5 to 6.1..Pulling her into the garage I also noticed alot of smoke from heat coming from the wastegate and behind the wastegate. Is this normal? Seems like a aweful lot of smoke! This is my first TR so I really dont know what to expect...Any other opions on what can be causing my knock? Alittle more info is that this car has been sitting...It was sitting for about 3 years before I bought it and hasnt been driven more then around the block a few times since I've had it..Could this be a factor? Do I really need to get this car on the road and run it? At this point with the knock and smoke, I am alittle afraid too!

Thanks guys!

I would start with as to the location of the smoke source. Some sources-turbo, turbo oil drain tube, transmission line leaks, oil on the crossover(valve cover, rear main seal, oil pan). Stay out of the turbo until you find the cause of the smoke. Good luck. Brad

Hey Brad
I see no oil at all and nothing on the ground either. The smoke from heat is coming right off the waste gate. I gets super hot! Is it supposed to get that hot? I dont have the hood on the car but I would imagine if I did it would look like its overheating. You can see the heat coming right off the wastegate even in this hot weather. Could I be clogged somewhere? The car does have power when the turbo kicks in but I do ed up with a 6+ knock on the scanmaster and the car is alittle sluggish off the line.
Thanks! Bill

If you have been touching it a lot it could be the oils from your hands burning off...although i don't think that it'd cause that much smoke. Also since the car has/had been sitting I would check out your fuel filter to see if its clogged up, and then I would check to see if the fuel pressure is rising 1:1 with boost via a gauge that you can temporarily tape to your windshield, but don't go crazy with the boost (lower all the way you can) otherwise you may be rebuilding your engine soon....6 degrees of knock is not good news! You have to figure out what the problem is here or you are going to look like this :mad::mad:

The fuel pressure is good. I have a adjustable regulator and it reads 40 pounds and 44 line off...The fuel filter and pump are brand new. This is getting me nuts! Anything else that can possibly cause it? I just hope this guy didnt give me the screws with a messed up motor!

could it be that the waste gate actuator isnt working properly?

If the turbo is blown, you will get smoke and KR.
Could also be false KR.

What boost are you running?
Look in the sticky. There is a Knock checklist.
Follow every single one of them, and than report back.

Launching power (Or lack thereof) could be many different things.
Belief me, I have been wehre you are at. :o
When I first got the car, it would not sping regular tires on WET pavement!!
There is hope.

could it be that the waste gate actuator isnt working properly?

Yes it could be the actuator but that will not cause smoke. Take a PIC of the smoke at the source and post. I smell blown exhaust side turbo seal. How is oil consumption? The knock list does work as well. Been there. Brad

this is an odd one but try checking your heater hoses right where they hook on the heater core, thats right behind the waste gate, if u got one spraying even a little fluid it would make plenty of smoke.

something else, when I swapped my turbo out, I started mine up and I didn't have the down and up pipe sealed up, and a lot of smoke comes out when I would shut it off, and it would smell of fuel too. If thats what you're seeing check your pipes there where they bolt to the wastegate elbow you could have loose bolts. or you might want to pull your pipes off and check the donuts inside if they crack or break they will leak no matter how tight the pipes are.
