Storing Tranny

I have a spare in-perfect-working-order 2004R. I've had it just sitting on a shelf for a couple of years. I started to eyeball it the other day and wondered if I should be keeping fluid in the pan and turning the pump over with the spare torque converter every once in a while.

Anyone have any suggestions on this??

I just saw that Cal22 has the same type of storage question. Hopefully someone can help us both.

I had mine rebuilt while the motor work was being done. When I picked it up, the mechanic told me to be sure and fill it with transmission fluid. It sat for about 3 years and it works fine. He really emphasized putting the fluid in it. I assumed it was for corrosion protection and to keep the seals pliable.

I went out and checked to see if I'd left the fluid in it and I had. Probably more out of blind luck than knowledge I had left it in.

If the transmission had been run or dyno-tested prior to storage, you're better off since everything got a good dose. If the transmission was merely built & stored, it is more susceptible to corrosion.

Could be a bit messy but it wouldn't hurt to fill the transmission with fluid, plug the vent tube, TV and filler tube holes and turn it over a couple times to coat all the parts.

I put a brake line on the in and out cooler lines, put a stock converter back on it (still had fluid in it) and turned the ole converter a couple of dozen time. If I'd had a speedometer I'd have connected that also....lol.

Seemed to do OK. Oh, and I made engine sounds, vroom vroom, at the same time to fool the tranny.
