How can I tell if the converter is locking properly ?

By the shudder when it disengages ?

When driving down the road, slightly depress the brake pedal with your left foot, leaving your right foot on the accellerator but not pressing down any further than would be normal at cruise speed.
If the convertor is locked, slightly tapping the brake will unlock it and the engine rpms will go up a few hundred rpms.
