Iam thinking about redoing my sub woofer set up. I have seen some subs where they are mounted outside of the box with the cone facing into it. Is this an acceptable thing to do? I have a TTA (no damn trunk!) and need to redo my set up for more speaker room. I have a pair of Boston Acoustics 12.5 pro series subs and Iam wondering if I could set them up to push into the box. Are there any goofy ill effects from mounting them like this?

Thanks: Jason

not really. people who compete use it, so it should be worthy enough for a daily driver. lol

I have seen that particular set-up in the early '90s but have not seen much use of that in the last couple of years except for isobaric bandpasses. Try it and see if you like it or not.

message for postgirl

if u remove a speaker from its enclosure, screw it to the box with the cone facing inwards it will sound identical...as long as u reverse the polarity of the speaker connection. One benefit of this setup is that u will have a cooler running voicecoil. if u do this ur box will have a larger volume since the displacement of ur driver is removed. another plus is that u can show off those big magnets!

good luck jason

Hmmm. cooler voice coil sounds great since thats what I fried on my one sub. But can I really reverse the polarity of the wires to my subs? I heard hooking up your pos and neg wires backwards would damage your speakers. Does this rule not apply to subs?
Thanks: Jason

Hey Boost you old enough to buy a Play Boy magazine yet or are you still stealing your dads copies?

phase of ur speaker must be reversed in this circumstance. yes it is fine to do this and your voice coils will not get damaged

dont get angry about my baby face...some people have to shave their heads to get rid of the grey...put on a santa claus hat so u dont catch a cold!

take care jason

Well I think this is how iam going to have to do it to help keep my voice coils cool. Plus Iam considering running three of these subs instead of two, and mounting them outside the box will allow me to make the compartments for each sub smaller.
I have a question for you surej..how can you get by hanging around prasad when your only running a TE60??? I thought you had to have a turbo with a 5" inlet minimum to hang out with that guy.
thanks: Santa Claus
p.s How many lumps of coal did you want this year?

check ur mail postal

p.s. i may have a small inlet but i got a nine inch downpipe

hey DR. Boost I was wondering if you could help me with another problem. Ive been married for 11 yrs now and my wife swears up and down that I must not have no idea where a clitorus is. She says that after 11 yrs I still havent found it, not even once! I was thinking maybe you could send me a pic out of one of those medical books showing me how to positively identify that damn thing! Please hurry iam affraid 11 yrs of marriage may be down the drain soon if I dont find it. I pray she doesnt find out theres young doctors out the who not only can find that damn thing but the f'n rich bastards have 9" down pipes too!

thanks: Jason
Thank god for Viagra and the hair club for men!

Jason,

As for your last post...I think that kind of "humor" would have been better suited to a Private Message to DR Boost.

At any rate...for F-Bodies, a good spot to locate subs is in the inside of the rear quater panels.

You can make a mold of the inside of the quater panel with fiberglass and use that as the back of your sub enclosure. It will have to be pretty strong and you can build it so its either a pressure fit or use pieces of wood block adhered to the floor with liquid nails and then screw the enclosure into the wood block so as not to screw into the sheet metal.

Unless you're competeing for db competition, or running your system really hard a lot...or if you're just going for eye candy, mouting the voice coils so they are exposed to ambient air won't really provide noteable benefit for a day-to-day sound system. Besides that, with the speaker basket hanging out, the magnet motor is exposed to the elements and isn't protected as it would be if it were enclosed.

If you use your trunk area a lot, that could pose a risk of damage.

- Good luck

im here for u postal

as a fellow gn owner, i understand the dedication required to maintain a 14 year old car, likewise, u shouldnt let 11 years go down the drain because of improper tuning. when the lights are dim just remember the NOS button is immediatly above the intake which is just above the dump tube. if you know how and when to hit the NOS button, then engine will purrr like a kitten...if ur knock sensor gets over sensitive , try saying the alphabet backwards.

p.s. there is no point polishing ur downpipe , u know its just gonna turn blue.
