Successful windshield scratch removal?

Has anyone ever done it with positive results? I know all about jeweler's rouge, etc. If you've actually done it, what did you do? Wife's car has a little scratch from the wiper blade giving out. Not terribly bad but noticable. I tried some rubbing compound and a buff/die grinder; didn't budge. Tried 0000 steel wool, nada. Tried Rain-X, nope.

Looking for solutions. Thanks.

Far short of throwing glass insurance on the car & then claiming you need a windshield.

I have seen a place near me that only on Wednesday's they will fix all chips for $25- not sure how they do it.

Yeah, that's a pretty common price, $25 - 30. I called the distributor I buy windshields from and they didn't recommend buffing. I'm sure they'd rather sell glass but I think he was just having a bad day; didn't sound normal.

Shame it's not cracked in your field of vision, you could get it replaced for free by your insurance company.

Try white toothpaste, such as Colgate, worked for me a few times.

The problem with buffing scratches is, if the scratch is very deep at all, you can eventually polish it out, but will leave a distortion. The general rule of thumb is, if you drag your fingernail across the scratch and it "catches", then it is probably to deep to polish successfully. We can generally remove what is called a "rub", but will usually not mess with a deep scratch.

The cerium oxide, or jewelers rouge, is the most effective compound, but must be used with a felt wheel on a high speed drill. It is a messy procedure, as the solution slings everywhere. If you really want to try it, I would recommed the Eastwood kit and follow the directions.
