On the fuel smell have you checked for an injector leaking down? This could cause the fuel to load up in one or even a few holes upon startup. This could also be causing the misfire you mentioned that cleans up under boost when a leaking injector would be flowing a lot of fuel and not be noticed. just a couple of things you could check. Good point. Pull the injectors and have them checked.

Duly noted, however I bought these flow-matched 42lb-ers new from TT along with the chip, so what's the chance one of them is leaking... How long should pressure hold after shutting key off? I'll have to check that again.

My car also will smell of fuel when started sometimes.

I know that the cam sensor signal must be found before the car can start. If the engine stops just after a cam sensor signal it could take two revolutions to see the signal again. Are the injectors firing during these two revolutions? Maybe there is some residual fuel burning or passing out the tail pipe from this.

Last time I checked my plugs (a week ago), they all looked perfect. No wetness or abnormal coloration. That would seem to rule out excess fuel or oil leaking into the cylinders. I also waited 20 minutes for my fuel pressure to bleed down and it didn't, although after an hour it was down to 0. Don't think I have any leaky injectors.

What are the chances one of the injectors is constantly operating near 100% duty cycle? Wouldn't that foul a plug eventually?
