My sister's husband got a promotion and they're moving to Indianapolis. They're not familiar with the area and are looking for any input on nice areas to move into. They've been looking into the north east area (Fishers). I forgot to ask for a specific location but I know he'll be working near the east outerbelt. They have three small children and are looking to buy in the $180k range. Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

The North side of Indy is the nicest...but the most traffic by far, and the streets are forever under construction. $180K won't get you near as much up there either. For $180K you can enjoy the west side and get more house for the dollar. I would recommend the Avon/Danville/Brownsburg area as they all have good schools. I personally, would stay away from anything with IPS schools, just my opinion.
I would have them look in Hamilton County (north side), Hendricks County (west side) and maybe southern Indy (Southport, Greenwood, Center Grove areas).

Thanks for the help! Schools won't be a factor. The kids will go to Catholic school once they start attending school in a couple years. Any areas on the NE, SE and east sides that they should stay away from?

IMO, I would steer clear of the east side all together, in Marion County anyway...seems that's always where the news say the crimes are happening. Southeast side is good (Southport/Homecroft area). Northeast is decent, but again, get outside of the city limits. Depends really on how much house they are wanting to get for their money. I've got a brilliant realtor friend I could put you in touch with if you would like.

Born and raised in Indianapolis...Mrs. Fastnasty is right...the east side of Indy is rough...especially around the 38th street on up to the 42nd street area.

And the south east side of Indy in Franklin Township (where I'm from) has some of the highest property taxes you can imagine. I also suggest avoiding this area unless you can really afford it....it's nice and for the most part crime free but as mentioned property taxes are high.

Go like an hour north of indy.to like kokomo,peru.tipton.i lived in kokomo for 10 years, its not bad,i was in indy about a month ago.man that place is a mess.

I've lived (well um, live) in Franklin township...I don't it too bad...of course, I suppose the bigger your land, the more you're paying. Southport is land locked (school system can't get any bigger, no room) so the taxes there are purty cheap. I would say there are decent areas all the way around the city...just not the East side...East side = BAD!

Small world...where in FT? I grew up in Acton, folks still live there. Most of it was farm land when I was growing up, then the farmers were offered I guess what was to them fair market value and the land was then turned into housing projects. With that they've had to build onto the FT high school, the FT middle school, then Acton's school had to be expanded. Then they decided to build 2 new schools over by the high school. That's where all the tax money goes.
