How can you tell if a 86-87 t-type came with the 3.42 positraction differential? (other than jacking the car up or pulling diff cover). Are there outer cover ID tags, option codes on the trunk sticker, etc? thx.

If someone hasn't taken it off there's a metal tag on the cover that says use Limited Slip additive

T-type Ring gear size

Thanks for the input regarding the posi-traction ID codes. G80 refers to the 3.42 ratio positraction diff with 8.5 inch ring gear.

Any chance that a T-type or turbo limited regal could have the smaller 7.5 inch ring gear with the non-posi option? NA regals from the 1980's sometimes had the very wimpy 7.5 ring gear in the differential. I'm unsure if this is possible with a turbo regal.

Thx,

actually, G80 just means it's a posi- there is another code for the gear ratio.
and, nope, no factory turbo Buicks made from 84-87 had the 7.5 rear end. it was a part of the turbo package, just like the 200-4r overdrive trans.
the Olds 442 also had an 8.5 rear- with 3.73 gears- and every other g body made from 78-88 had the 7.5 rear (upgraded to 7.625 in the last couple of years in some cars), no exceptions.
