So I just installed a new TE44 on my car, and its giving me some problems. Before I installed it, I aws just running a stock 86-87 turbo. Everything worked pretty good, the way it's supposed to...turbo ws just getting a little old with some play. So I got the TE44 on and took it out....the damn thing will just not build boost. I even just let the wastegate bleed to the air (which usually causes obscene overboost) and I could get it up to 3 lbs. On the old turbo, youd get some pretty heavy turbo flutter after a rev or even 1 lb boost. Now I get none. Besides the no boost, the car runs perfect, same as it always has. What in the hell could be causing this? I thought I remembered hearing somewhere that some exhaust housings dont match prefectly on TE44s, I just used the ported one I had on my old turbo. Like an idiot I didnt really check for perfect alignment, but could this be an issue?

Two things could be happening:

One is that puck is not sealing because the the hole in the housing is too large. If its too big, you'll need a larger puck.

Two is the header flange warped to the old turbo and now you have a slight leak. File the header flanged flat, make sure the turbo flange is flat and/or us a riviera or aftermarket copper gasket

Ok, thanks. Do you know where I could find a larger puck? Or is there a special exhaust housing for the TE44?

You can post a wanted ad for an elbow with a larger Puck. Turbomike from western Virginia used to make them. He hasn't posted here for a couple years. People who switched to THDP's may still have them laying around.

TE44's usually start life with a small wastegate hole, but some people order them for a THDP and the vendor drills them out or the owners go crazy with the dremel and the stock puck isn't big enough.

Does anyone know the wastegate hole size of a TE44? Mine's on the car right now, and it's a real pain taking it off to check. So I wanted to avoid that if possible.

Mine is right here in front of me, and I'm a machinist so no worry about the wrong size. It is 1.275" or just over a 1 1/4 "(1.250). When I read your thread I was thinking that the puck is not big enough in the stock waste gate. I have TE-44 turbo, 50# injectors, SMC Progressive Alky Kit, Hye tech Down Pipe, trying to find/decide on a intercooler, will get a chip burned once my combo is aquired. I will do all the upgrades at the same time, at least that is my plan. Oh by the way good luck, it always a downer pulling parts after you just installed them, love that anti-seize..... Here to learn/help.

my TE 44 was 0.90" , unless yours was ported thats the size it should be

Hmm

This Turbo is brand new but sat on a shelf for 2-3 yrs. I bought it off a board member as a TE-44, I will have to do some research to see what I have for sure.

Pacecarta thanks for the heads up...

Im using a ported exhaust housing with what I believed to be the right wastegate, a normal adjustable one. I didnt think there were differnet ones? Just different mounting brackets.

Are you using the stock elbow? If so when changing the turbo on a buddys car he removed it with the elbow on and when he set it down he bent the lever for the wastegate actuator. When we put it back on it would not close fully and not build boost. We just bent it back out and made sure it moved freely, from then on no problems.
