Been picking everyone's brains the last few days. My car has a stock long block. MSD 50's, Razor's Alky, and 3" THDP.

Limit Engineering recommended the TE62, while several people did the TE61.

I heard the 62 got a bad rap from years ago by one company, but Limit hasn't had any trouble with theirs.

They are the same price, so I was just wondering which would be a better choice.

Thanks and I will be upgrading TC when turbo is done

I had a TA62 Limit rebuild on my car for a year.

Bought it from Nick M. on the board.

Nice turbo but made some funny air noises on and off the throttle and since it's a small shaft turbo it bothered me for some reason. ;)

It's my spare and I will use it again for sure.

I think 3200 stall, mine was a Protorque single disk lockup, and a good chip, are necessary to spool it okay for normal street type driving.

Just my .02, both are good choices.

Really depends on what you want to do for a converter and your ultimate HP goals.

Call Red Armstrong. He will sell you a GT67...P-Trim for around $700, with accuator! Spools up almost as quick as TE-61, get the .63 housing if you have any worries about spoolup. John builds these for you, but you pay Red A. Get a little new technology with the quicker spooling of the GT wheel (compressor side).
My TE-61 was almost too fast to spool, and ran out of breath early. (see signature), spring will have 10s for me with stock motor.

What is a GT67Ptrim? I had the guy at Precision recommend either a PT61 or a PT67ptrim. He said these had the gt wheel.

I've never gotten a Precision turbo before, only from Limit which I bought from Quad Air.

I spoke with John at Quad Air the other day and He said that he didn't like the TE61. The TE62 was a better turbo. Chopper at Limit also recommended the 62. I wasn't told anything about a GT turbo from either vendor. Should I call back and inquire?

That's my problem, the vendors are saying TE62 for the most part (except precision) but most board members I've talked to say go with the TE61 cause the 62 used to have problems.

The 62 had a lot of failures when it first came out but that was at least 5 years ago, and it seems to have a good reputation these days (you can check the archives at gnttype if you want to see the discussion from back then). Start with a 74 trim turbine and 60-1 compressor and that's a te/ta 61 (and a pte54;, and I could have the 74 wrong but it doesn't really matter for this discussion). Go up to a P trim turbine and that's a 62 - flows more air but spools a little slower. Now, change the compressor wheel to a GT61 and that's the most popular version of the PT61 (you can get it with different turbines but this is the most popular version); again flows more air and is more efficient especially at > 25 psi boost, and spools about the same as a 62. Change the compressor to the GT67 and that's a PT67, again usually with a P trim turbine. There are some mixed reports but it definitely flows more air under say 24 psi, but may not do as well over that as some other wheels. I used to have a PTE54 and a friend has a TE62 and they spooled about the same, but we have different injectors and converters so it's not a great comparison. I now have a P trim GT67 and it seems to spool exactly as fast as my 54 did, so I'm really happy about that. I haven't pushed the boost past 23 psi or so, so I really can't comment on where the efficiency starts to fall off. The next step up is the TE45a-class, and that's a definite drop in spoolup so you will need more converter.

I haven't run one personally but from what I've read I don't see any reason not to go with a GT61-P trim instead of the 62. Nothing wrong with the 62 but the GT61 should make more power at the same spoolup and be more efficient over a wider boost range. Or go on to the GT67-P trim.

Thanks James. That was very informative. Sheds a little more light in some blurry eyes on the topic.

I have the TE-62 with an 85 housing (see sig). It loves high boost. I have run 30 to 33lbs on the street. I havent put the 9/11 on the car that I bought with the blower and the red stripe isnt enough, but I can build more boost on the line than I can hook without any problems. Once spooled 5+lbs, its ready to go.
