In Utah, you can get a concealed weapons permit (thru due process, of course)...

Also in Utah, the teachers are running into more kids with guns & other weapons. And in the Jordan School District (where I live, btw!), each school has had it's own on-duty policeman--until now...Due to budget cuts, yada yada, you know the rest...

Anyway, I guess quite a few people who work in the school system have gun permits, and with the cops leaving town, they just want to be able to make use of them.

Personally, I don't blame them, and I see nothing wrong with it. Gun permits have been available around here for YEARS, and I don't EVER remember a permit-holder ever being arrested for a firearms violation.

Whoa, I teach and it's a good thing I don't teachers like that working in my school or I'd get nothing done!

Bring back the paddle!

I am sure the paddle will be no match for a kid with his parents gun.:(

The #1 problem with education is that we spend too much time on discipline in the classroom. The government has taken control out of the teachers and administrators hands. If you've ever hear the rap-song "Step Dad" that's the same crap I hear from my students and I'm a pretty strict teacher. Time to bring back the "Board of Education!"

If teachers need a gat in Salt Lake schools, they must need claymores and .50s in LA, Miami, NYC, Detroit, etcetera!

What is happening in our country? Are things that out-of-control?

That's really scary. I have no problem with carry permits, but not in the schools for God's sake! It will take about 5 seconds for the kids to discover which teachers carry, and as soon as Mrs. Wishbone sets down her purse or Mr. Funnybone gets distracted, you've got a kid with a gun. So much can happen in a classroom that it will be easy for a teacher to forget about that weapon, especially since we continue to allow class sizes to increase. My wife was a teacher in some pretty tough schools for too many years, and most of her co-workers (men included) weren't fit to carry a slide rule, let alone a handgun!

Yes, things really are "that out of control".

Don't you mean that the class gets disrupted?

We send our kids to parochal school & the teachers there say it is a joy to teach because they only get like 1 or 2 % disruptiuon. Where as when they taught in public school the disruption factor was 25 -30%

I was a middle school teacher when I was in the states. I used to teach a program called Alternative Learning Program. This was designed just for students that have "disruptive" behavior that was causing their academics to suffer. This program is an in-school program that tries to help students improve their behavior before they are transferred to an "alternative" school.

It's a really sad day when teachers NEED to have guns in school. I've had students that have been pretty threatening and even had to resort to restraining tactics with administration on several occasions.

I have to agree with Matt W. on this. There are plenty of teachers in the system or are not the gun-toting type. Sure, they are great teachers, but police officers, they are not. Trust me, that is why their students were sent to me because they couldn't cut it. So, give 'em a gun, and I see even more troubles on the horizon.

That doesn't mean I'm against action on students. I've always told my administration from day one.. I wouldn't do anything stupid and I would always look for the students safety, but when it comes down to a kid killing me or me killing a kid... BYE!!!

Sad... remember folks. There are some of us who ARE trying to make a difference.

Steve, if I remember right, your 5th grade teacher was pretty. Remember in Jr. High, the history teach Ms. Hare? Wasn't she in a Playboy pictorial on teachers?
Discplining disruptive kids in the classroom is not the problem. Dealing with the idiot parents that are chromazone challenged is the real issue. When little Johnny has a letter sent home about his bad behavior, his mommy comes in drunk and argues with the teacher about it. She claims discrimianion etc. Dumb people shouldn't breed. Can't blame the kids if their parents don't do what they are supposed to. My son is in public high school and fortunately is in high level classes. He has very little issues with discpline in the class. They are all too busy thinking of what college they want to atttend. The low level classes on the other hand should be held in a barn since most of those ones are animals.

"HOT FOR TEACHER!"

"... CLASS DISMISSED!!!"

And the other song...

"Have you seen Junior's grades?"
