when i had my timing chain done i bought 2 gears and a chain and a gasket set. did i need to buy a tensioner and cam button also? what will happen if tensioner is not used? would this explain my intermittent knock sound @ idle? also, can bad water pump bearings cause and intermittent knock sound at idle that goes away when engine is revved?

Fess up! I guess someone else did the work so more than likely they reused the button and tensioner (ask to make sure). If they didn't then it will give slap and probably destroy your motor in short order. The bearing in you pump could be bad. Take the belt off the car when cold and try it. With the pump not spinning you will have your answer.

yes someone else did it for me. he had to have re used the button and tensioner as i only bought 2 gears and a chain. should i get it redone?

Well I would ask them. I could see them leaving the button out by mistake but the tensioner they would actually have to unbolt it which would take a total ass if he did that since it wouldn't need to come off to do a chain. Need to start asking some questions and go from there. Also check you cam sensor as they give this sound also.

i see what you're saying. the guy that did mine, he used to build race engines and race cars and stuff and he is a buick fanatic (unfortuantely he loves buick 350's). i will ask him tomorrow. hes pretty smart w/engines and all and he said he hates to have to do a job twice. its been about 3 months since i had the chain done and i just noticed this about 2 weeks ago. i will ask him though nevertheless. about the water pump, where can i get one?

I have seen this problem at my friends shop. If he reused the old cam button ,the spring is worn out and the cam is hiitting the front cover. Once it moves forward and sits agaist the cover it no longer knocks, but it is chewing away on the inside of the cover. Buick replaced those old style cam buttons with a nice bearing style which works very well. Ask your guy if he got you the newer style.

he did not b/c my guy did it in his garage while i was on vacation and the only parts he had are what i bought and gave to him (the chain, 2 gears and a gasket set). is this button the same one on ramchargers site listed as the roller cam button for $12. can i pick it up at a local auto parts store?

You can pick up a new water pump from Autozone for around $15.

Yes, it is whatwould be considered a roller cam button. They are cheap even at the dealer, give them a call. Before you pull everything apart, just give a listen with a stetiscope (?) from your parts store to see if it's in that area and give the water pump a listen as well.

With 3 month since the job was done, I would look close and the other items that would/could be the source of your noise. Even a used tensioner or button could be the root of the problem, but not high on my list of things to check.

If the guy that did the work is a Buick 350 V-8 specialist, he would be very familiar with the V-6 also.

had to bring this back up....

you can pull the cam sensor out and look down in the cover to see if the tensioner is there...

now the thing is if its broke or not..

i just pulled my motor down tonight for inspection and im going to add a girdle before i brake it and my tensioner is broke again....

this is the second one that has broke in my motor and its getting old..

first one was from advance and this one is a good used gm one from a low mileage motor i had here..

anyone else having problems with them braking???

and yes when the tension is missing or broke it will make knocking sound mainly around 2000 rpm

the sounds is a knocking noise but not around 2000 rpm. only right when i blip the throttle lever by hand in the engine bay does it make the knock. after that if i hold the revs up it is not present. im thinking its the cam buton since i have a 115K+ mile stock one.
