Ok, I know this is everybodys FAVORITE type of question, but...
There is a terrible banging sound at idle, I dont notice it at higher RPMs. The car seems to be running fine otherwise. Can anybody out there give me some key points to check?

turbosam, In this case, I dont know how to be more specific. It makes me want to cry. Does that help at all?

Thanks for the suggestion of torque convertor bolts, that seems like the area it may be coming from. What would the procedure be like for tightening them? Can I access them if I remove the cover?

Yes, you can get at the torque converter bolts if you remove the cover. You will have to rotate the engine (preferably using the flexplate) to get at each of the bolts.

You really didn't say what kind of noise, knocking, ticking, grinding, when the engine is cold or warm, does it happen during acceleration or deceleration. Give us somemore hints:confused: .

I hated to use the word, but it is a loud knocking/banging sound. I normally only hear it at idle, cold or warm. I may hear one thump when I let off the throttle quickly, but that may just be a figment of my imagination.

What's the best way to rotate the flexplate?

If you stick you head in there and really listen you can tell approximately where it is coming from.

Is it coming from the top? Is it louder on the left side or the right? Is it a solid thud or a metallic tick?

Get underneath the car and see if it is coming from the bottom, or the front or rear

I use a tool (with a handle) that grabs the teeth of the flexplate and allows me to rotate the engine. Additionally, the engine will rotate easier if you remove the spark plugs. Another thought may be one of your accessories may be making noise. Try removing the serpentine belt (starting the engine) and see if the noise disappears. After all that the final thing to do remove the oil pan and start pushing on connecting rods. The number 1 bearing was gone on my engine, so I didn't have to push at too many. If it is internal engine noise, I'm really sorry to hear that.

When the engine is idling watch your accessory belt tensior. See if it is jumping and making the sounds. May be losing the bearing in it.
