I was told by a different builder that my TH400 went down (within a couple of miles) because the snap rings were mixed up and the wrong one was used on the intermediate drum. I was told one snap ring had a sharp 90 degree outer face and the other had a rounded face.

Does this make any sense?????? Which one should have gone where?

Sounds like the center support snap ring got mixed up with the clutch plate retaining snap ring. The center support snap ring has a tappered edge to bias the support against the opposite mating surface.
