anyone done this and been happy with it?

Many many threads on this topic. I think for the most part people that have switched are pretty happy with the switch but some miss the overdrive. I am going to make the switch myself as I want reliability and peace of mind of the TH400.......to each his own.

I think as long as you don't do much freeway driving it would be ok.

I have a 400 w/3500 stall and trans brake. the constant shifting and reverse valve body is fun at first.........but you get used to it. be sure you use a good shifter, I have the pistol grip Hust with the tans brake button on the top, will be moving it soon to the steering wheel, (the the trans brake button that is......) hope this helps

i did it and liked it but i missed the OD too much and went back with a built 2004r and now im happier

If you drive it on the street at highway speeds alot then the OD is the way to go. I've had both. I just bought another 200-4R.

This may be a dumb and obvious question but I will ask anyway. With the TH400 manual valve body, is the driver always having to select the gear changes? If so, doesn't this get old manually shifting the tranny???? Just curious since I am considering this as well......

yes you have to shift it manual, and no it didnt get old.. it was fun

I am dreaming about a 400 with a Gear vendors unit on there.
The thing i like about the 400 besides being super strong; is that you can take it to a good local rebuilder and they wont mess it up.
The $peciali$t(s) and $pecialty part$ for the 200r4 gets real expen$ive.

Im happy with my 400. My prebvios car was an 80 camaro that i drove from 90-96 so im used to no overdrive.

I feel the gear split is a little better, and the taller 1st gear helps traction on higher hp cars.

And i LOVE the manual valvebody.

I use a hurst 1/4 stick as well.

I have to ask because I am completely ignorant to what goes into the conversion to the TH400.....is it required that you have the manual valve body? Why do people have the manual valve body in the TH400? I would prefer to put the car into drive and just go......

To get a transbrake, you need the manual vb.

I love my 400 on the street. With 28" dr's and a 3.50 gear, it's not bad on the highway either. I drove my car from Lousiville to BG last year. 70 mph was about 2800 rpm or so.

So is anyone with a TH400 running it without the manual valve body? If so, how do you like that setup? I wonder how many people have the manual valve body but no trans brake?

I'm going out on a limb a little..... but I did alot of reading on a TH350 and TH400 swap.... the manual valve body that nearly all run is IMHO related to the factory TH350 (and I also think 400) use a vacuum modulator to control (to an extent) shift firmness and shift RPM...... much the same function as a TV cable does on a 2004R or a 700R4. The rub is that the vacuum modulator sees no vacuum under boost... and it messes with the shift quality... and RPM's....... most go manual to circumvent that issue when they convert to a 350/400....

FWIW... I think at one point there was a company that actually made some form of TV cable conversion that replaced the vacuum modulator in the 350/400. I am unsure if you still had to have the "kick-down" cable as well as the TV cable to make it work.... Maybe someone else can fill in the missing info....

Here is an old post I found here:

Old "mechanical modulator" post

I didnt have mine in very long before I parted out the car but I def didnt regret the swap. My next GN will be a TH400 also

I have a revers manual valve body TH400 with a cheetah shifter. I love it, but it's not FWY worthy. :frown:
