done a search couldnt find any thing on this.thinking of putting 400 turbo in my 87 gn know the 400 is stronger but what differences will there be like lose horsepower due to more rotating weight? and at about what speed can comfortably cruise in with stock 342 gears and 275 60 15 tires. this is not one i drive every day or anything just a toy, cruise around backroads or take to track. any input greatly appreciated thanks mike

For a cruise comparison, when you are out cruising, put the shifter into D and that's what it will be with a 400 in 3rd. Both trannys have a 1.00 third.

u'll loose a lil hp due to the rotating weight of the 400th. plus 1st and 2nd gear are a lil steeper due to it being a 3 speed trans. i know because i just done the swap. at least it's added comfort that i'm not gonna blow the 400th apart as easily as the 2004r. but if you got the $ you can beef up the 2004r. with the 400th at least put some lower 1st and 2nd gears in and a smaller diameter converter.

thanks guys how much differance in 1st&2nd i thought there was a differance but i thought the numbers was slight. did you run it with stock gears first how much change to the trans with gear change. will be my buddys spare for his race car. trans brake, good parts ect held up to abought 1200hp i dont think ill be to hard on it lol.getting kenny at ptc to build me a conv.conv and freshin up trans will be only cost again thanks mike

i run a 400 in my 87 1st and 2nd is real strong i run my car mostly at the track i have a small converter cruising on the street rpms kind of high but its kick ass at the track the burnouts are spectaular its a good trans for drag racing like the other guy said it will be harder to blow up

I did the swap when my car was running 10.60's @ 128mph. I took it to the track and ran 10.30 @ 131mph. As a 10 sec car, it was the first time in a very long time that my tranny lasted a full day at the track without something happening. I got a transbrake with it so it has a reverse manual valve body and that was added fun factor on the streets. If they say you will lose power I would think that would probably happen with a 11' sec car cause it only bettered things for me and I don't have to constantly pull it every year and drop $800 into it. The only down fall is that missing gear.

If you still want overdrive, and don't mind spending the bucks, Gear Vendors has an OD unit guarenteed to 1200 hp. Not cheap though.

Buy a 4L80E before you buy a Gear Vendors unit. 4L80E is a T400 with a extra gear. Why bolt a add on on your tranny and have to go through all the stress of getting it right. Its also cheaper if you just buy the 4L80E after both units are installed in the car anyways.

i'm still with the 3.42's. i haven't got any track times to show any differences. i'm just going by the sop dyno :p. a 4l80e would be a awesome choice but then you gotta deal with the electronics part of that and an adapter plate. please correct me if i'm wrong :)

thanks guys for the input .the car i really dont know alot about bought off board the guy dont know anything about it. so i dont know really whats in the trans has a yellow tag i think thats 84,85 model not sure.and the 400 is that we have is built. so kinda no brainer on the swap just kinda wanting idea what to expect.trans in car just lazy in gear changing for my taste thanks mike
