Someone give me the 12 second recipe.

I recall someone listing things that you should do to get your hotair Turbo Buick into the 12's, and I would like if someone could re-list it. It doesn't have to get me into the lower 12's, or anything like that by all means. High 12's, mid 12's even if possible.

I just wanna get a list of things I need to do to get the car where I would like it. Just something a bit comptitive anyway. Thanks guys.

Well, I spoke with Brad before, and some other guys.

Someone said on Turbobuicks.com that there's a member who apparently lives in my area who put a hotair block close to the 9's. Not that I want to get that fast with a hotair, but I'm interested in knowing how one could push the block into the 12's without spending astronomical amounts of money.

First.....I have never heard of anyone getting a HA close to the nines, the block in an IC'd car, yes, non-intercooled, no.

The block was originally a HA. But it was intercooled, yes.

My mistake if I seemed as though I were implying it was STILL a hotair.

But yes. That is my interest, in intercooling a hotair block and building it into a consistent 12 second vehicle. Now if someone could give me a list of things to do, and what type of work that entails, that would be awesome of them.

A simple and proven way to the 12's

1. make sure all sensors are working correctly and in good shape.

2. aftermarket fuel pump with an adjustable fp regulator

3. adjustable wastegate or some means to adjust boost

4. get rid of the pass. side exhaust manifold, it's horrible at best.

5. a 2 1/2" or larger DP

6. a proven aftermarket chip, such as TT or ME-R

7. A good scan tool like Direct Scan or some of the others out there

8. a meth/alky kit

9. An upgraded larger turbo helps alot too

......there are many more things you can do, head work, suspension, cams, tires and all the same things you can do to an IC'd car to make more HP...I'm sure others will chime in......but I can't stress # 10 enough

10. Patience, Patience and more Patience......just throwing parts at one won't make it fast.

You have come to the right place to ask questions, there are many knowledgeable people here who are more than glad to help....Good Luck

There is really no reason why a properly built intercooled 84-85 block wouldn't go into the 12's with the correct set up. The above information is really all you would need besides doing some of your own research and reviewing previous recipes.

Hrm.. Here's a question.

Couldn't I just send the motor in to a place for them to rebuild it UP to an 87 intercooled motor? It's about 1K to rebuild, and for them to put the new peices in as they go along, that would run what? Another grand? 2?

the basic engine didn't change from 84-87- same heads, cam, pistons, rods, etc. the blocks are diufferent, but functionally interchangable with the proper head gaskets- so if you have a stock hot air 3.8, then you already have an 86-87 spec motor..
you just gotta bolt all the newer external stuff (intake, turbo, etc) to it.
but it shouldn't be that hard to get your car to go as fast as you want without an intercooler. you just gotta get more air flowing thru it, and add more fuel to match.

Nobody ever said I was expecting to get it cheaply. I just wanted to know my options.

So after hearing all the options and stuff.. I've kinda narrowed it down to this...

What you really need is a...

1. Intake
2. 87 Turbo
3. 87 Computer, wirings

The one problem is HOW do you make room in the engine to install an Intercooler and larger Turbo? HOW?!

*Smacks head into wall*

It's a lot more involved than you think, you'll need the fuel lines, oil lines, all the sensors and all brackets they mount to, full wiring harness, throttle body, vac.lines, power steering plumbing and resevoir, ehaust manifolds, it goes on and on........BTW......if you look at your own pic, when you get rid of the mechanical fan and shroud, that's where the room for the IC comes from....good luck

by doing what the Buick engineers did when they put the intercoolers on the cars- get rid of the mechanical fan and associated shroud, and put an electric fan on it.
i ditched my mechanical fan and went with an electric fan a few years back when i put a larger 3 core Cutlass radiator and top plate in mine. there is a LOT of room between the radiator and water pump when the fan and shroud are gone.

Well it depends on how much you want to spend. What really needs to done to bring out the power you already have & to get that power to the pavement.

Traction, so tires and good shocks(edelbrock myself) drag shocks for the strip, for tires, BFG radials are good, falkens are good also. Try tiresavings.com and look around then go to a local tire shop to buy/order them. As for sizes if you need help with that, stock is 215/65R15. You can use (235,245,255) 60 R15's any of those sizes i believe. I use the 235/60R15's myself, nice and wide

Open up the air intake system with some 3'' pipes you can make from home depot and slicone couplers from pep boys or some other

Try a big air filter, try S&B on ebay or the K&N 9''
I use a 4'' x10 inverted S&B air filter myself with a 3''- 4'' adapter

Exhaust, if your pipes are ok(not rusted, rotten ) take off the mufflers and use a better,hi flow one(s). NOT FLOWMASTER they are not for this car. SOme use them but i say like 95% don't
Dynomax are really good but this is my opinon, HOOKER aero mufflers are good as well.

catalytic converter, your factory 1 is useless. IF this is a street car use a hi flow cat, maybe with a dump out pipe to use at the track later. IF this is a strip car, i think you can run straight pipe. Again i like dynomax super hi flow cat check it out at the website.

The 85-86/87 ECM conversion cost! but is worth it. IF you don't have the funds to do so, get a chip, i like using caspers ultrachip myself.

Now Comes the oil/fluids
I use LUCAS OIL, ANYTHING LUCAS I USE IT. So oil cooler and trans cooler is a must, i use B&M supercoolers myself. Change out that trans/oil fluid & filters,
Some use Royal purple oil, they claim HP & TQ gains, it cost but HP gains from just changing the oil, sounds good.

Now as for gas im sure you now the higher the rating the better for TRs.
I use a blend of LUCAS OCTANCE BOOSTER,LUCAS FUEL TREATMENT,Marvel Mystery Oil(big bottle) 93 pump gas, Fuel cooler

TUNE, a good tune will win the race,
Scan tools get one, turboscan, scanmaster you choose.
gauges get some! BOOST GAUGE,AIR/FUEL GAUGE TO START.

Now your fuel pump is useless also, go to racetronix.com and get a kit ( pump and hotwire )

Fuel pressure reg, an adj FPR is great but if you can get one, get the next best thing, bosch 237 (i believe, might be wrong on that one.haven't use that in yrs) There are some on ebay for 20$ last i saw

GO electric! change out that fan and get some electric fans going.

Change out that radiator to a 82-92 camero one from autozone or parts store. Other members will know more about this one.

THis should all cost under 2k give or take
I know, i did all this and more. So it really all depends on you. How much you can/want to put into the car. How much you want the car to put out( i know that sounds funny don't lauge guys)

Last but not least INTERCOOLER, i guess us TR guys have to stick together so try FROZENBOOST.COM, my plans are to go water to air intercooled. RECLOCK THE TURBO and use the IC KIT. I just haven't gotten around to it. I have a stringray vette,IROC Z28,CHEVELLE SS,NOVA SS, BUICK T-TYPE TO MANY CARS, GET ME!! haha

anyway that's just my idea anyway, LONG BUT HOPE THIS HELPS.
