Well, now that i'm finally trying to get my car registered, I have to worry about CA's lovely smog and visual inspections.

How the hell am I supposed to pass the visual?

I have CPT61 with polished housing, a 3.5 maf pipe with LS1 MAF+trans, and a THDP.

Thats all I can think of that sticks out as "not stock" when you pop the hood.

I'm putting this here because I want to know what people in socal are doing about their smog situations.

Well according to a referee I spoke with, the downpipe doesnt matter for smog and even thow I have a LS1 Maf sensor, he didnt tell me anything about it. As for the turbo, it all depends on who you take it to to see if they make you take it off or not. I would just take it to a smog station. If it fails the visual, they usually dont charge you anything. Then fix the problems and take it back.

By visual, I mean the DMV wants me to bring my car to THEM so they can take a look at it.

Don't worry about the visual. Make sure that there are no "open filter elements", no alky, and no vacuum leaks. I have smoged 3 TR's in the past few months with no issues. The smog people and surely the DMV people have no clue what they're looking at. Just make sure tht you have new plugs, O2 sensor, clean oil, and maybe a little alky in the gas tank...

DON'T EVEN WORRY.. i drove mine up to the DMV to have the VIN checked so i can tag it.. i have a roll cage, tach mounted on the steering column.. i popped open the hood and the tech looked at the motor and didn't even say anything.. the only reason why i didn't complete the deal, is that Maryland just passed a law that 20 year old cars don't have to be smog :D .. so i'm clear with my tags

Be careful of how you discuss any illegal smog related issues on line. Big brother maybe watching.

This reply was just on the DMV vin checking process.. i never took the car to a Smog person here in CA, so i don't know if the car would pass them for a visual...

a good tip is to make sure your t/r is at operating temp when you smog it.
don't fire it up and drive straight there.

Well there is 2 issues here and both are different

1.) Are you trying to smog your vehicle becuase you have had it registered for 2 years and your smog/ registration is due?

If yes then yeah you have to smog it (most likely at a test only place) and they will visually look for smog compliance and hook it up to the sniffer and check emissions at 15 and 25 mph

2.) Are you just registering a vehicle in california because you just bought it from another party?

If yes then all you have to do is take the smog paperwork (which the previous owner should have done before he sold it to you) and they will check the vin number (not check smog items) to verify the vin and the pink title match. In this case you dont have to worry about smog as long as it already passed. DMV will do this dmv doesnt check smog equipment for this process. Also the smog to change title does not have to be test only....

Hope this helps!

turbo39151, thanks for the advice, i'll get rid of the breathers
Nordy, I read you're gonna be in Fontana on Friday? I may have to roll down, haha.
fasted, noted, thanks!
my1stgn, #2, kind of! Bought the car from NY in 05, smashed it up, took 2 years fixing it and bolting on some gofast parts, finally ready to get back on the road.

I think he meant the air filter as well. My friend took her Honda in and failed the visual because she had an open element K & N air filter on one of those cold air intake pipes. Yes it's gay, but I guess it happens...

Victor: come to my place and we'll hook it up. I told you that the place I use is now familiar with TR's.

come to Fontana on Friday and run your car...

I still need to work on my 60' and for now I really want to get my 1/8 mile et down some before I make any 1/4 mile passes. Besides, I really dont like Fontana. Takes waayyyyyy to long to make a pass and last time I went the track was preped pretty ****y. Even after the new track was done and new ownership was at hand. Ive been there plenty times and dont think its worth the 2 hr trip. Barona is like 30 min away and plus with the new born kid and all, I dont want to stay too long out of the house....... but once I get the car running better Ill definetly go out to Fontana and make a few passes:D

Ill keep you posted!
