well... pulled the pan to do the rear main seal on my 87 GN today... checking stuff over I grabbed a rod that was easily accessible and I could just knock it back and forth on the crank journal and make a nice knocking noise with it...

I guess I found my 3 second startup knock.. :(

Don't worry, for tomorrow i scour every local yard for a 4.1 to build :)

If it only knocks on startup and not when its good and hot I doubt thats the source of your noise. BTW, they will move side to side a little. Usually startup noise is lifters bleeding down. Bearings tend to be louder when the oils hot and thinned out, and quieter when cold when the oils thicker. HTH.....

yeah i didnt know it could move back and forth on the journal DOH

my dad looked at it and i'm fine... it wasnt moving like a spun bearing, just sliding back and forth on the journal a little... and they were all doing it... i didn't think they were supposed to really move on there at all, but whatever

so yeah... 160k miles and still going strong :)

i should do a cam/lifter swap and take care of that noise and the leak at the back of the intake all at once :)

Put in some new con. rod bearings and button it up. You're already there and they are cheap. Takes about another 30 minutes.
