Is a 275/50/15 tire the same height as the stock tire? Will this also rub against the frame? I want to put the widest drag radial on my 87 GN stock rims but maintain the the same height.

Thanks
George

A true to size 275/50/15 tire is 25.85" tall. The stock size 215/65/15 tire is 26.0" tall. A lot of guys run this combo and it works well. Be sure to use a wheel with 3.5"-3.875" back spacing on the rears and the 275/50/15 tires will fit fine without rubbing.

Beware that the Nitto drag radials are VERY short for a 275/50/15 tire. They are lucky to be even 25.0" tall. I had a set of these and decided to get BFG drag radials which are WAY closer to a true 26.0" tall tire.

Hope this helps..

Oh great

Oh great, I just ordered the Nittos instead so I can get them a week earlier. I'm going to have to cancel now. Thanks though I'm glad you replied.

275/50's

Nittos are 25.7" tall, BFG's are 26.1" tall.

Nittos are slightly narrower so will fit on a stock GN rim with much less rubbing than a BFG.

I don't like 275/50's because they are too short for even a mildly modified TR in the 1/4 as they top out around 113 mph on a stock motored car. 275/60's allow for higher trap speeds.

UNGN....are the 275-50 Nittos to small even if the convertor is locked up????

Thanks

I'll use me as an example. With the converter locked and 275/50 BFG's, the fastest my car EVER went in the 1/4 was 11.92 and 113.96 mph and never broke 114. BFG's are about 1/4" taller than the nittos so I would have gone slower with nittos.

With 275/60's it went 11.7's @ 115 right away and has achieved 118.31 and 11.53 in the 1/4 mile with the converter locked.

This is with a 100% stock longblock with 90+K miles, stock converter, Bluetops, Thrasher 108, TA49 @ 23 psi of boost, big neck stock intercooler, THDP and ultraflow exhaust. You can't get much more of a "mild Recipe" than that.

I've seen many people run Nittos on what should be "11 second combinations" yet they only run low 12's @ 111, even though they have 1.70 60fts. Switching to a taller tire is the solution many times in these situations.

If I were to buy a pair of Nittos, I would only buy the new 275/60's.

OK...next question!!

Great Info UNGN....I presently do the 1/4 mile traps at 110..sometimes 111 with the 275-50's and locked converter...put the 275-60's on and the mph drops to 107 everything else is the same.....

At what MPH would a 28" tall tire benefit me..Im thinking that 110 mph is borderline in my case.

Thanks Again

Better measure again UNGN... Unless yours were taller than mine they are barely 25.0" tall. I could see the difference 100' away that they were substantially shorter than the BFG 215/65/15 fronts which were 26.0" tall when I measured. Yes, I did measure with the tires mounted, inflated, and off the car.

This I DO agree with. :)

The height of the tire of 25.75" is from Nitto. There is definately some "squish" when the tires are mounted on the car and some tires "squish" more than others. That's why the manufactures' "revolutions per mile" is a more accurate way of determining the "gearing difference" between two different tires, than the tire height.

A soft sidewall tire like a drag dadial will "squish" more than a stiff sidewalled "regular radial"

I figured that you were probably quoting Nittos specs when I saw the .750" difference.

I placed one of my Nittos against the garage wall in an upright position and used a straight edge so I was laying on the very top of the tire. I then scribed a line on the wall with the straight edge, and measured up from the floor to the line 25 5/8 with only 20 lbs of air in the tire. I figure if I was to add more air...say 27-28 lbs of total pressure I would see the 25.750 size.

I still would like to know at what MPH a 28" tire would become more beneficial than the 26" tire....

Bob

would'nt you go faster with the 275/60's?
George

...thats what I though

I thought that it would go faster with the 28" tires and locking the converter at 75mph...but it bogged it down like shifting into OD. I think I may be right on the HP edge using the 28's vs the 26's. I may try to get the TCC to kick in at a lower MPH to see if that helps

any other suggestions??

Bob
