hey guys, i got a dilemna here

i recently upgraded my fuel system "walbro 340, with hotwire kit" "new adj regulator" " 36 pound injectors"

ok so i go to start this thing up and it is just pouring out black smoke, which means it is too rich i assume"

The car has a really nice idol but is waaaay 2 rich. ALL my pipes are covered in black on the inside.

so i was wondering, when you are to set fuel pressure, would i set it at 36# static(line off) or with the vacuum line on?
Would it have to deal with my Chip that was burned for 36# injectors or no, possibly?

i do need to get a scantool, but i assume i need the cash to upgrade the ecm first.

so if anyone could give me a little insight on this, i would appreciate it
thanx

yeah,if you didn't change your chip it's not gonna work:D.you should go ahead and upgrade your ecm and have a chip burned for your combo.

later,sean

something else is wrong

He says "Would it have to deal with my Chip that was burned for 36# injectors" so his chip should be ok yes?

I would think his FP is too low but would that cause black smoke?

I get a puff of black smoke every time I let up after a WOT burst but no other times.

Sorry I have nothing valuable to say but I don't think it is his chip if it has been burnt for 36ers but I could be wrong.

I would check the O2 sensor if you haven't yet. I had a similar problem with the dark smoke, changed the o2 sensor with an ac delco and cleared it right up. No custom chip or injectors on mine though. Good luck.

Sorry - I miss read your post.

Assuming you have a correctly burnt chip....what 36's do you have? 868's or BlueTops? If the chip is burnt for the wrong injectors you will have an overly rich probelm.

If you are sure the chip is right, check the following:
Fuel Pressure - stock intakes like low FP start @ 30-32ish static and watch your knock.
Maf - Do the tap test and see if your car stumbles.
Exhaust leaks - #1 reason these cars run rich, get them headers welded and you'll really notice how "slow" your turbo spooled.
02 - highly unlikely, but don't rule it out.

Good Luck and keep us posted.
Jeremy

I hope for your sake that you have Blue Tops instead of POS 868's, but if they are the latter try lower fuel psi.

My car with the stock intake like about 26-28 with 868's and a T/A Syclone pump and 23-25 with the V3.

After re-reading your post I wouldn't go much lower without at least a GOOD knock detector.

I'm sure you've heard this a 1000 times and I know it sucks but you're flying blind w/o a scan tool.

well i got my 36# injectors from postons. they have a wide green stripe on them. when i bought them , i was told i needed a chip for them.So i bought that also

i dunno how good postons' chip are. anyone else used these? The car has a really nice idol to it, maybe i just need to learn what is the best fuel pressure for my car, ya know? Im just lookin fer a quick fix cuz its gunna take me a few weeks to just have the cash to upgrade my ecm, so i can get a scantool.

Does anyone know what brand injectors Postons sells? This would aid me in buying different chips in the future.

I assume i have way too much FP, now that i look at what people suggest and what i had mine set on, its way different
the only really big mod i have on my engine is a V-1 turbomotion intake.

well ima go yell at my car and lower my presure and see what happens, talk to ya guys later

a puked o2 sensor will just dump fuel into your mix. Doesn't read properly you can go through a half a tank of gas going a short distance. So, this could be an issue, have you ran leaded fuel. Hot airs like it lean. But would do the ecm upgrade and then get a new chip burned by red armstrong or someone who is burning for the hot air s with the 86 87 ecm. Did poston know you had a hot air when they ran your chip. I didn't think they burned chips for hot airs, if that's the case this is your problem. Do you remember telling them that? Otherwise they burned it for a 86 87 ecm and would cause the issue you described.

welp i assume i am gunna go to buick and get me a new o2, i guess it wouldnt hurt to try that
i had a bosch, but everyone says to use genuine gm parts
so ima go buy one

when i ordered my chip, it was for an 84-85 with 36#, so i am assuming it is the proper chip.
well as for fuel pressure, what is the standard pressure for a 85 Hot air car, i know all cars like different pressures, but what pressure would be good to start with? and i can go from there.
i do think mine is way too high.

so can anyone tell me what would be a good pressure to start with, and ill give it a shot after i get off of work

thanx
