If I look under the car is my torque converter and flywheel supposed to be in plain sight (because it is) or is there a shield that I'm missing?
 
I'd say that someone purposely left it off, to help disipate the heat in the converter quicker.
 
I think Quadzila has one for sale in the pfs section. If its not him someone had one on there recently.

i have done this in the past but know better now i run an old cover with holes drilled in it to help cool and still protects the flywheel from damage

Same here. Track only is fine but even then a few small rocks on return road can cause a problem.
