I have been getting a little worried about the Allison in my truck. It has all the symptoms of being overpowered. What is the ticket to keeping these things alive? I have seen some REALLY high dollar parts but are they necessary? I also have seen Trans Go shift kits for about 200 bucks that they say cures all the problems. The engine is still N/A but it does have a programmer and some other other stuff. It puts close to 300 to the ground which isn't a pot-load but enough I guess. Any experience out there? Thanks in advance.

we had problems at 12,000 miles. lock up clutch in the converter was slipping when towing the 2 car trailer. and putting the trans in failsafe(3rd gear only) i tore the trans down and it looked new inside. i got a ATS converter which also comes with a line modifiter valve that goes in the pump. i install them with the allison deep pan($49.00) and deep filter($22.00) i got from the allison dealer. now were comming up on 80,000 miles and most are from towing. when i ran the truck the power up grade was set to 65 hp. the owner would set it to 85 or 125 hp and tow. i didnt do this because egt's would climb fast. and 65 hp was good to pull with. the whole thing weight 28,500 lbs. it was an 01 duramax with a k+n filter and a stright thru muffler. 01's also need the MLP sensor updated on the trans. so far so good!! i love the duramax/allison setup!

So the converter fixed the problem? No shift kit or anything else? I took the truck to the track to race (since the GN was still busted) and only ran it 3 times. On the last run I launched and it felt like either I totally blew the tires away (NOT likely) or it went into neutral. I backed out and it then hooked up and left. Then a Moosewang destroyed the clutch in his car so I drove 60 miles home, got the trailer, 60 miles back and picked up the car. We got the car on the trailer and headed out. About 30 miles into the trip the truck shifted out of OD and wouldn't shift back up until I killed the cruise. Then I was able to slowly increase the speed and keep it in OD. I checked the fuel mileage and it was horrible. I can usually get 10 to 12 and this was like 8 if even that. The truck is an 01 with the 8.1L. I LOVE the combo but have always been a little leary of the trans. What is a MLP sensor updated on the trans. and what does it involve? Great idea on the "stock" deep pan. Aftermarket ones are really expensive. Thanks for the help. Night Train, I will also check out the website.

MLP: is Manual Lever Position :D

That is about the extent of my Allison knowledge. ;)

These guys I have found , know what is happening.

Ck out this site and call them. They have helped me out on my own duramax allison. I have found them to be most knowledgable on any facit of these trucks and drivetrains.
