This question kinda got lost in my cruizin post so I'll ask here.
First a little background. Some cruizin friends of mine have a pristine 1961 Impalla. 100% original in every way, and with only 36,000 miles on the ticker. It's powered by a 283 4bbl power pack motor.

Now for the tranny trivia

It's equipped with a Turboglide (no that's not a mis print, I actually said Turboglide, NOT Powerglide). On the shifter column the forward gears are only D or G.

Know what it is?? Figure out the G?? Tranny experts please don't spoil the fun.

I was going to say the G Spot...

At first I didn't know where this thread was headed.....

Grade or Grade Retarder.

They were more money than a Power Glide, too.

The owner states that the TurboGlide is pretty much the same as the Buick DynaFlow. One gear selection for normal driving (D), and so buttery smooth you never feel the shifts.

It's using a t400 housing with two gears supposed to be bad ass right

Back in the day a friend of mine had a 58 Impala with one of these behind a 348 . Not very impressive . A guy that I worked with had one in a 57 Bel Air . Still wasn't impressed . Neither guy kept their cars long enough for the turboglides to give any trouble .

I understand they gave a lot of folks trouble .

That's because they were so terribly misunderstood. And as such were badly abused. They were NOT meant to be a performance transmission.

But the newer ones being built are but cost 5 to 6 k for them right I think some of the x275 guys are using to

Has anyone ever done a powerglide in a TR? What is the weight/hp limit for one?

I grew up with Impala fans and I can still hear the old man saying " it'll go anywhere if ya shift into GRAAAAADE!"

You can build a glide to run with big HP.
