Can you use an aftermarket shifter with a manual transbrake?

Of course. I have a manual brake and use a B&M Quicksilver installed in the stock console. I'd hate to use it without the ratchet style shifter as the departure out of the hole is rather brisk

Did you have to modify the shifter?

If you're talking about the B&M shifter, I did not have to modify it. It fits nicely under the stock console plate. You don't use the cover that comes with the shifter (B&M Part number 80683). There's a nice writeup on the boards of someone installing a Quicksilver under the console. Just do a search. I didn't cut away too much under the console plate, just enough to clear the top of the B&M. Console is real easy to remove, too, in case you're worried.

If you were refering to the stock shifter needing modification, it all comes out; from trans bracket to under console. New shifter, cable and bracket go in its place. Quite easy.

The ratchet action and solid construction make it feel way better than the stock shifter, especially with a trans brake. Only thing to remember is to let go of the shifter when you slam into 2nd to release the brake. The car may launch so hard you'll pull back on the shifter if you're still holding onto it. Not a good thing to go back into trans brake mode when the car is moving.
