I have an idea that I would like to toss out for review. Soon enough, you will figure out that I am not an expert in transmissions, so I offer that disclaimer up front. I can hold my own in working on any mechanical device however.

I recently had my 87 GN tranny rebuilt by a local shop. To make a very long story short, I finally won the battle and have a very strong running tranny. In the process of this, though, they installed a huge servo with no accumulator in it. I understand the physics of this and also realize the hard shift it presents while driving around town. It works great under WOT and shifts tight between gears, but around town driving makes me want to leave the car parked. Problem is, I want to drive it more on the street than the track.

So, the question. Is it easy enough to keep a smaller servo on hand, one with an accumulator, that I can run on the street and swap out with the solid servo if I want to go to the track? Does this require draining the tranny or am I simply looking at a drip hitting me on the head? Should I even be contemplating this or is there a better solution?

I am seeking advice first this time instead of doing something and then trying to figure out how I got there.

Thanks

Andy

You probably have a Sonnax servo. Go back and remove the spacer they use and install a stock cushion spring setup. Ensure you maintain the band clearance as it is.
This will cushion it somewhat killing some of the bang into 2nd ,and the downshift clunk on a 3-2 shift.

I appreciate the feedback and confirmation that I am headed in the right direction anyway.

I haven't gone under the car to look at what I am up against. Does this require removal of the pan, draining fluid, or anything of the such or is this simply a bolt-on piece that is easily removed and replaced externally? I see a cut sheet on the sonnax website for their 17% larger servo and it has specifics on testing and adjustments. Is a stock servo a simple add to the tranny once the sonnax is removed? Anything that I need to be aware of or pay attention to as far as adjustments, installation, lube of seals, etc? Seems like there are always ways of doing something better, tricks of the trades, that I seem to always come across after I already commit and I am trying to do this one the right way first.

Thanks

Andy
