I installed my Direct Scan tonight, and it doesn't seem to be working.

If I move the cable back and forth on the ECM it pegs high and low, but never the actual data. It's just a bunch of garbage.

The cable is slightly scratched, but only the insulation, not down to the wire.

Hopefully you guys can help me with this.

I'm attaching a copy of the DS file (just change the file extension from txt) and a pic of the cable scratch.

Thanks guys.

Here's a pic of the cable.

I'm running a HP Pavilion ze4300 laptop with Win XP. I can't figure out how to run this in DOS Mode, so could that be the problem? How can I run it in DOS Mode? Do I need the adaptor?

did you prep the ecm really good. had the same problem and thats what it was. i would start there.:D

DirectScan only work under real DOS. So you need real DOS or nothing higher than Windows98. It will not read from the ECM under WindowsNT, WIndows 2000 or Windows XP (I'm not sure about ME I've never tried it yet).

Also, if the cable is on too far, you will get bad reads and possibly even popping and back firing.

There plenty of threads here that can give you all the details on DS and Windows.

Your quickest solution is to run off of a floppy disk.

Go here and follow the instructions.

My laptop doesn't have a floppy drive. Could I make a bootable CD ROM?

Sure you can, but you won't be able to save your runs unless you have the laptop hard drive formatted in FAT.

DOS can't read or write to an NTFS without 3rd party support (yes it is possible but you have to pay to be able to write to an NTFS partition from DOS).

HTH

Best and cheapest solution to run DS trouble free is to get a cheap used laptop off ebay or similar, that's running WIN98SE or earlier operating system and has at least a floppy.

Trying to mess around with all the crap that needs to be done to get a WINXP machine to run DS just insn't worth the hassle, besides, why waste all that power.
