i currently do not have any tuning device for my 87gn. please advise on the best way to go and the pros and cons.

Get a Scanmaster. Best place to start! There is plenty of info here (use seach feature) on tuning with a Scanmaster. You can get pretty far just with a Scanmaster. Check the vendors here. They have them.

Wideband with a powerlogger and scanmaster is the way to go, but it adds up quick $.

thanks. i have a very limited knowledge of the tuning and electronics on these cars. what exactly does the wideband do?

Wide band O2 sensors are much more sensitive than the stock O2 sensor. It allows a more precise tune. Since you are new to this, stick to a Scanmaster. It will give you all the information you'll need as you learn more. If you plan on doing your own work (or just want to be more informed so you don't hurt your car), there are hundreds of posts here and on the .org site that can explain tuning and what mods to start with. The first thing to know is knock is the devil, in boost it will destroy the engine in seconds. Good gas is a must. The fuel system needs to be in perfect operating condition and improved for saving your engine. The stock chip is not great compared to what can be done with a Turbo Tweak chip. Eric matches your combination very accurately for great tune. Plenty to learn but it's better to spend some time reading and asking questions then replacing your engine. Good luck.

Yes that is my car at Cayuga, a long time ago. The wide band is an extra oxygen sensor that goes in the down pipe. TT has a special chip that you can program, and it will tune the engine for you up to a certain point. If your fuel system is not enough it will add fuel or subtract fuel to the injectors to get the best air to fuel ratio for your engine, but it has limitations, but its better than guessing your tune. The factory o2 sensor is only accurate on a very narrow range and the wideband is accurate in all ranges basically. You can have a scanmaster and power logger and wide band all connected together working for you all at once. You will need a laptop in the car to record your data with the power logger, and post logs on the board here and people will determine for you what you can do to improve your tune, but if you plan to increase boost the steps that pronto outlined must be followed, or pay the price of new HG. Your car looks like its got a lot done so now is the time maybe to get serious tracking whats going on in the ecu to see whats safe and what is borderline.

Ok, now you have listed your mods in your sig so at this point you got some nice mods and the only things I'ld look at are different mufflers (other brands work better) , Alky injection and a TT chip to matching your mods. A Powerlogger would be a nice addition as well. You got some good times there.

Sounds like you've got a pretty good start on things with your car. Pretty sweet running car !!!

The Scanmaster is a great tool, but at your level, I would want something that I can log/save data with. The Powerlogger is the way to go. You will find the Powerlogger a very valuable tuning tool.

You may want to invest in a Turbo Tweak 6.0 alky chip to go alog with the Powerlogger, if you have the extra cash to invest in the chip, WB O2 sensor and the alky kit. WHat fuel did you use on that 11.50 run?

I attempted to contact Razor to find out about ordering his alky system but haven't heard back from him yet. I plan on doing exactly what you guys are suggesting. As soon as I can get the alky kit I will order the PW and TT chip. I always run 112 octane race gas when I run the car. I have a friend of mine who is very knowledgale with our cars. He has been advising me up until recently and is upset with me for going against his advice when it came to upgrading my turbo and torque converter, So I think I am on my own from now on. This site is addicting. I had no idea this site even existed until stumbling upon it the other day. Hopefully I can find some new mentors to guide me.

I saw a muffler system somewhere, I think at one of the vendor sites. It was a stock location setup looked really cool. I forgot to bookmark it. I always run the exhaust open through the dump pipe at the drags and ALMOST always through the exhaust on the street. What is the hot setup on the mufflers?

Yes you are absolutely right! I NEED a scantool/logger before I hurt my baby! I find it hard to believe I have come this far with my car. My father bought the car new and I bought it from him in 2005. At that time the only thing he ever did to it was wax it. The first time I took it to the drags it ran a mid 15 sec.
