Turbo Shaft Play?

How do you know when your turbo is going bad?I read about this topic and they say to check the shaft play,is this side to side play in the wheels or in and out play.Can someone please tell me how I check this,Thanks,ikle.

Zero in and out...very slight side to side.

I've had two turbos go bad.
first one - up/down play and side to side.lots of it! Car smoked like hell at hot idle

Second one, up/down play only. smoked like mad under boost
Moral of the story? Play is not good, my present turbo has no discernable play.
