Turbo size??

I know this isnt related to an actual GN but its similar...i plan on turbo charging a 327 and putting it in my car in my sig (yes its a monte carlo I know I know) and was wondering what would be a good size turbo to but in?? I'm looking for something reliable nothing to get me super fast but i do want forced induction and everyone with a monte is either N20, Naturally aspirated or supercharged and i want to be different...would a stock GN turbo work or should i go with an aftermarket piece, i would have taken this over to www.montecarloss.com but since you guys work with turbos everyday i figured id ask you

what size converter will you be running? Forged bottom end? Carbed 327? What kind of compression? Sounds like a big job. I would think if the bottom end is good, a ta49 sized turbo would be more than sufficient. The only thing I think would be a factor is that with the small amount of boost you plan on running, you may be operating the turbo out of it's efficiency range. Maybe a smaller turbo than the ta49 would be better..........

The size you want will depend mostly how much boost you want to run, how many rpm you'll run, and whether you'll be intercooled or not. Tell us that and we can help make an intelligent decision.

Okay guys,

The bottom end will be forged (crank, rods, pistons etc.) Yes it will be a carbed 327...compression ratio im not sure cause i dont know what would be best to run on turbos...im looking to run possibly 9-11 pounds of boost i think will be sufficiant enough for me (personally dont know much about boost either im learning) the rpm range will only be a maximun of 6500 rpms maybe not even maybe 6000, i would like to go intercooled and if not ill not go but if i can make is possible to do so i will do so

Hey thanks man that helps me some...what is the stock boost setting on GNs...i want to run something reasonable what are most of you guys running out there on the street?? Cause i know that there are differences in boost for super and turbo c hargers it seems to me turbos have higher numbers than superchargers anyone help would be appreciated

Stock is 12-14psi.

I run 27psi all the time.

With running more boost does it affect your gas mileage any?? Jeremy what kind of gas mileage are you getting right now?? If you don't mind me asking.

Around town I get 16-18 and on the highway I get 26-28.

As long as you keep your foot out of the pedal - it's not going to affect mileage.

Would anyone know what an Ideal compression ratio would be to run with a turbo also what about a twin turbo set up would the compression be anydifferent im turning this car into a show/weekend driver car no rain or anything so it hardly will see the road but i want to be able to drive it to the show drag race it and beable to have ppl look under the hood and be shocked at what i did...so compression ratio its got me anybody know

If it were me i would try two stock GN turbos. Use a set of street rod headers or old rams horn manifolds turned upside down. 8 to 1 compression. See if there is a sbc version of the 204- 214 speed pro cam lots of people are useing in GN's. If you go twin turbo you could use 2 of the Isuzu NPR intercoolers. Simple, cheap , and easy.

THanks man where would i be able to find a set of those rams horn manifolds, would it be better to use fuel injection or stay with a carb it doesnt matter to me which one i use i want best performance and best drivability and the least amount of tuning...ill take a wild guess and say that fuel injection would be easier right

Fuel injection would be the way to go. Probably the cheapest way in would be an old gen 6 dfi. They get a bad rep. but they aren't that hard to use. The best way would be a gen 7 dfi. the sbc's of the 50's and 60's used the rams horn manifold an so did alot of the medium duty chevy and gmc trucks. 40, 50, 60 series.

Okay since ive got some money i think ill go with the gen 7 DFI...but where can i find one of those applications, and would i be able to locate the manifolds in a junkyard or be able to order them throughlike a restorations company like OPGI or someone like that

Loniie Diers at Extreme Automatics can set you up with a dfi. His shop # is937-379-2610 m-f 9:00 to 5:00. You should be able to find them in a junk yard or even on ebay. If i were going to do this project i would start with a low budget short block. Stock crank, rods , pistons, until i got the learning curve down. Then after you get everything figured out build a good short block. If you hurt a stock short block you ain't out much money. Just my thoughts.

Kool steve thanks for the info you gave me and ill check some of the local junkyards around here, just for fun should i maybe stick the turbo on my stock 305 since it will be going soon or should i build something cheap and then test my abilities on that, and now ive stepped up to a 408 cid small block the 327 just couldnt get ahold of so ive gone with that instead, its got an all forged bottom (crank, rods, pistons) on it so far is that a good start??

The 305 should make a good test mule. It probably won't take alot of boost and timing because of the cast pistons but a 305 isn't worth much anyway.
