How do you get the upper and lower speedometer cables out of their housings so you can lube them? Did a search and turned up some how-to's, but nothing specific.....just has general information like "remove cable from housing clean and lube then replace then repeat with other cable."

i recently lubed up my cable by pulling my dash out and simply squirting wd40 down the cable and rubbed some vaseline on the connection part on the dash.

my speedo cable jumped skipped whizzed whined and whirled. now its quiet as can be.

Once you disconnect the cable ends the actual metal cable itself just pulls right out and install is the reverse. When you remove it you will see how easy it really is.

May be able to spray down inside the housing on the upper one but the lower one looks like it may be a different story.

Where they disconnect under the hood near the brake booster the upper cable has a male end that inserts into the female end of the lower cable. I'm not sure how to get the lower cable to where I can lube it. It has a threaded end that the nut from the upper cable screws onto. In the center it looks like a washer that may or may not supposed to be removed. I'm sure I could force it, but..........don't want to break anything. Anyway inside that is a white plastic female end that the male end from the upper cable fits into. I need to know whether I pull that washer out then push the cable up from the bottom from the transmission end or if I don't mess with the upper end and just pull the cable out from the transmission end.

On the upper one can I just need to spray lube down into the housing where it comes apart under the hood or do I need to remove the instrument cluster and access it that way and spray down that way or do I need to pull it out of it's housing and if so from the engine area or from inside the dash?

mine was easy. I disconnected at the transmission end and there was about a foot long cable with housing that I disconnected also. Then I disconnected from behind dash and was able to remove metal cable from housing. Maybe someone replaced mine...

Maybe someone can chime in who has the same setup as you. Sorry I could not help.

For upper cable:

Remove dash cluster, disconnect cable from back of cluster by pushing in on the metal retainer clip. Use needle-nose pliers to grasp the little blue segment on the cable and pull the cable out.

For lower cable:

That little washer you were referring to does need to be popped out with a screwdriver. After that, pull lower cable out with pliers or push up from transmission end if you can't get a hold of it up top. Once you are done, the washer just snaps back in place.

Thanks......I ended up separating at the connection under the hood and sprayed WD40 down both openings and no more sound at least for now. Tried to get the washer out but it would not budge.....so this actually happened to be a fairly easy fix and I didn't have to take anything major apart
